- Lonely Laowai174 contributionsHeads up: tickets mandatory, guide recommendedI got a rad guide from the Ella New Green View, older dude named Kumara. I can definitely get the appeal of doing a hike on your own, but I’m glad I didn’t. We helped more than a couple lost travelers hunched over their phones in the jungle at four thirty AM, my man Kumara actually leading a small troupe at one point. The sunset is amazing, and you will have to pay a ticket, about 1000 LKR as of the time of his review. Get a guide, do the hike, definitely worth it.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 February 2024
- Sajjjers8 contributionsIt’s a must do in Ella!A sunrise hike to Ella Rock is well worth the visit. We were unsure if it was worth getting a tour guide at first - but I’m so glad we did, I don’t think I would have felt comfortable hiking in the dark without one and it meant that we stayed on the right track and made it to the top for the sunrise. Our guide was organised by our hotel. We started the hike at the railway track and made it to the top in about an hour and a half. The climb itself is manageable but suitably challenging, although we might have felt that more because we were pushing ourselves to get to the top in time! At the top you have to pay a small environmental fee and there are toilets nearby. When you see the sun rise it is so worth it, you are surrounded by mountains and the view is breathtaking. We were pleasantly surprised there were only about 6 other people at the top so we could really enjoy the tranquility of it all. The walk back down stunning, through beautiful trees and tea plantations. If I ever visited Ella again I wouldn’t think twice about doing this again. Loved it.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 March 2024
- B M9 contributionsLovely views!Incredible views and lovely hike. If you are anyway fit from doing gym or spin classes, you will find this walk easy. Steep incline for the last 20 mins but otherwise fairly easy. Other reviews are accurate, so watch out for people telling you to go on longer routed, so use Google maps. If going from Kitha Station drop off point, walk about 300 yards, past a little cafe and take a left, left again where the river is on your right. Walk down and turn right over the bridge and it splits into straight ahead or to the left a quick steep incline. Take the left, it's a shorter more direct route and no chance of leeches. This left turning is after the bridge almost look like you are going up in between a hedge and walk straight and follow Google maps.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 April 2024
- HayesNZThames, New Zealand106 contributionsExcellent- but beware of scamming localsGreat walk and fantastic view. Beware of "friendly locals" who scam you. See my pictures - don't get tricked into taking the path that has a fake arrow and sign on the rail tracks, just over the rail bridge and beside a small shrine (it does go to a waterfall) - that path has a few diverging paths which the "friendly locals" then rescue you from being lost then expect you to pay for the privilege. Instead, stay on the rail tracks for about 5 mins of walking past the little train station. Then stay on the main path. You will come to a fork where there is a sign advising how much it costs at the top (viewing location), stay left at that sign, then follow the path from there.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 3 May 2024
- MomoNorthumberland65 contributionsStunning walk, beautiful viewsA beautiful walk with stunning views. The walk is definitely worth doing but do not listen to the locals at the shrine- continue on the railway line til the station. The locals scammed us. They deliberately sent us on a wild goose chase 50 meters before the train station- from where the route would have been very obvious. The lady tried to get us lost and was very rude to another tourist who joined us very frightened by this group. She then said we owed her 60 dollars!! Do the walk but be prepared 😀Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 August 2024

- Harry D4 contributionsAmazing walk but beware of localsAn excellent walk with an amazing view at the top (you have to pay 930 LKR per person to get to the viewpoint) but BEWARE of locals, who will try to take you off the path - whatever they say don’t listen! We had one man come up to us wearing a uniform claim the path was covered in leeches (with the bloody feet to “prove it”) and we should go a different route - we did and inevitably another local came to guide us to the top and expected a cash payment afterwards. When we came back down the route we originally planned there was not a leech in sight!Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 November 2024

We start from near the Kitha Ella station, walk along the tracks and then at a certain point turn right (you will find local people at this junction). The climb to the panoramic point takes about an hour. I entrusted myself to a local person who, for a few euros, accompanied me along secondary roads both outward and return. Unfortunately, once we got to the top everything was completely covered and I wasn't able to see the view from the two viewpoints.
Once you get to the top the entrance to the panoramic points costs 900 rupees (honest in not making me pay for the entrance since the visibility was zero)

One of the best hikes in Ella - of course we wanted to climb Ella Rock. We arranged a guide and were quite happy to have him, as there were not that many people on the trail and we could have easily gotten lost many places along the way (and we're seasoned hikers). Once on the top of the rock there are great views almost 360 degrees. We started at Kithaella Train Station, and the whole hike (up and down) took about 2 hours.

Amazing hike with some of the best views imaginable of Ella. I highly recommend getting a guide, as the trail isn’t obvious or straightforward and the hike starts on some railroad tracks, so it’s good to have a local who knows the train schedule. The whole hike takes about 2 - 3 hours. I made the mistake of not respecting the elevation and needed to take a longer rest than normal from exertion. The second half is fairly vertical and requires some decent work. We started around 8am and it’s wasn’t too hot. The sunrise views require getting started about 5am. If you’re not keen on the sunrise then a 7am start should afford a more comfortable hike experience. The main peak has a water vendor and amazing views, but be sure to walk along the ridge for a second vista. There are very cute trail dogs who will do the hike along with you, too.

The place has fantastic views, but after walking for about 3 hours, getting lost along the way on several occasions... We managed to reach the top and were surprised to have to pay 900 rupees per person.
We got there following the instructions of a traveler's blog and even so, several of the signs that indicated them had been removed from the train tracks.
Therefore, you take an unmarked route, without receiving help or any type of service (just some bathrooms without water) and in exchange, you have to pay 900 rupees to be able to enjoy the views after 3 hours of climbing.
We recommend the maps app. me to find the way

Easy one hour walk from the station. After half a kilometer take a path to the left. You will realize that it is the correct one because you will cross a small bridge. Immediately after, turn left and you will arrive at your destination without problems. Nothing much to see, especially because charging (even more than the locals) makes it all a bit annoying.

My husband and I decided to go up for sunrise on our own, as we were told it was easy without a guide. We did get quite lost at first, but this was mainly because of a cheeky local confusing us. They want to show you the way so you pay them a guide fee, so they tell you you're going the wrong way / your map is wrong! We ended up turning left too soon so we went a route without a path which wasnt ideal but we made it with the help of some stray dogs! We missed sunrise but it didn't matter. If you want to make it up for sunrise you would need to set off about 4am, and I think it would be best to get a guide as finding the route in the dark was hard. You need to keep going past the train station until you get to a path which takes you across a bridge over the water. Then it's a clear path!
The views were incredible and it was only us up there (about 7.30am). When we were leaving some locals were setting up a stall and gave us some fruit and wouldn't take any money from us! They sell water and coconuts up there too incase you don't have any.
The route down was super easy and you couldnt really get lost. It was starting to get pretty hot so I would definitely recommend going early, the views are better then too.
A must do hike whilst in Ella! You can do it guide-less in day light, just stick to your route and you will be fine :)

Incredible views and walk, one of the best things I have done in Sri Lanka, would recommend as not only is the viewpoint incredible but the walk itself is insane walking along the railtrack, through vegetable and tea fields, jungle areas and forest, took 4 hours with rests and pictures, the effort is worth it! (i walk a decent amount but for non regular walkers would still recommend, plenty of places to stop along the way if willing to give the time!) :)

We hiked up the quiet back trails from the railway and ended up in front of a big sign indicating that we have to pay an entrance fee to get to the viewpoints. Which the views are night but: Wow… again foreigners pay way more than locals. Cannot say if it’s worth. We talked with the guards what the money is used for and they said for example tending to the forest. Later we passed two dead trees that for safety reasons should better be cut dow. In retrospect I would say it’s better to go up Little Adams peak as long as this one’s still free.

For avid hikers this is a must do when you visit Ella. You can walk three kms along the railway tracks to the first station (westbound) and then carry on for ten minutes or so (along the way you go over a nice train bridge) until you reach a dirt path off to the left (it is a hairpin turn) that leads to a small bridge over a picturesque creek. Follow the path up through a tea plantation until you reach a split in the path. Keep right (there was a volleyball net set up between two trees). Go under the net and carry on via a path through different scenery including long grass and then rocky climbs among the trees up to the top. There were other people on the hike so could not really get lost. We did not use a guide but others did. You could also take a train to that first station (Kithalella) for ten rupees and save about three kms. It was fun o do that if you get the train timing right. The view was spectacular and well worth the strenuous scramble that took about an hour and a bit. If you have any mobility issues, you would have major problems scrambling up and down (also strenuous). Great spot for a selfie with the amazing vista in the background. Total time for the hike from Kithalella station was about four hours.

From ella railway station one must walk on the railway track towards kitala ella railway station. after passing kitala ella railway station,on to the right side there is a white building (a hostel)JUST BEFORE this building turn left , walk over the bridge and turn right and then hike for miles. There are 3 view points close to each other. 1st one is good and the 2nd one is near the woodnd house and not so good.3rd one is to the right from the 2nd one and easily the best
From ella railway station it took us 3 hours to the 3rd view point and about a hour and a half for the wayback
Do check the train schedule from ella station as it can be dangerous to walk on the railway track
The view is awesome from the 3rd view point and a must do in ella

Hi I notice many people are commenting on the heat during the day. We are booked to go for a ten day trip to Sri Lankan in April. Will be staying in Colombo, Anuradhapura, Kandy and Ella. Can someone give me an idea about temp? Is it humid or dry heat, which we are very used to in SOuth Australia!

Are there any swimable spots on the way to the peak? We have 2 kids aged7 and 10 and the hike all the way up may be too much, but it sounds like the scenery on the way is quite beautiful. We’d love to find a spot to swim on the way. I read in Lonely Planet that you can stop at Ravana Falls on the way to Ella Rock butbthis doesn’t seem right. Thanks for any tips.
Written 25 January 2019
Hi, the hike is not too hard for your kids, some paths are easier but it will take a local to show you. It's not really an area for swimming but there's a stream to cool off about 100m after leaving the train track as you join the track up to the rock. Check water quality before you decide. Enjoy the walk, the views are amazing.

Hi,
I'm very interested to do the hike on Ella rock. how long does it take to get up and back?

The shorter route might take 3 1/2 - 4 hours and the longer route would take roughly 5 hours up and down.
However longer route has the best views, so it's up to you to decide !

Is it dangerous there about snakes 🐍 , leeches and other dangerous staff? We are planning to go to Sri Lanka for the first time and I'm trying to know about everything. Please guys tell us everything what u have seen there🙏
Written 9 August 2017
Hi.
Snakes🤔!?! I don't think so.aslong as u kno snakes r snakes☺️. U don't hav to worry much about them as long at u stick to more popular trails. Off the trails myb u encounter them but as long as u don't disrupt or disturb them u r safe.
Tip :u got to b bit careful in d dry season and in d dry zone cos there there r most of d venomous ones were(Yala national park. Anuradhapura/polonnaruva. Vilpattuva national Park. Kumana bird sanctuary. East costal areas )
Leeches.. Yeah hill country in d wet season. U will encounter a lot specially if u walk across tea plantations. It's better u ask locals is there any if u going to walk off the track routes.
Wild elephant... Don't try to feed them even they looks friendly. They and always accompanied by a local professional guide. And keep safe distance. Better stay in d vehical. Giv good attention to details of their behavior.. They r naturally more aggressive when they hav their babies around cos they c u as a threat.
Sea...sharks no! But if u dive swim or walk on reefs beawere of starfish and very rarely sword fish.
