Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's about a 30 minute drive along the dirt road to the parking area and then you choose a short easy walk to the viewing area or a ~3km walk up and down (twice) the canyon. It's a walk that includes some steep steps but with rails and rope rails. My wife managed it 2 weeks after breaking her collar bone. It's well worth a moderate effort and great fun.

Certainly one of the most beautiful natural surroundings in Uruguay. Just a pity that they did not invest into the parks infrastructure. Be sure to take with you enough water to drink and something to eat. If they improve on the service facilities, it would deserve a five star rating.

This is a lovely hike which begins atop the canyon, descends through forest and rocky areas with the aid of ropes to the river and across and up to the other side. At this point one walks along the ridge and then descends to the river again. This is a great stopping point to cool off and feel the breeze. After this there is a short walk along the river and then a climb back to the stop, where the viewpoint is. The view is of the river and canyon and forest area. Then, back about a half kilometer to the parking. The hike is about an hour and a half, without stops. But, stopping for birds and views is recommended.

The park hike is great but you are not allowed to swim in the natural pools. When you finish the full hike and go back to the administration, you will see just before reaching the park buildings a road forking to your left and a sign saying "Comida Casera" (home-made meal). Follow this road, cross a couple of gates and you will reach two houses. Enter the second one and there you pay 30 pesos to hike to the waterfall - which is nice, easy and very refreshing. When you are back, do try the local meal at this guy's place. It is delicious, cheap and very filling. Ask him for his home-made orange wine. We spent 350 pesos for both of us and really enjoyed the garden, atmosphere, meal and wine. It was a great climax for an enjoyable day.

We drove to this site from Treinta Y Tres and had a great time while we were here. The hike itself is fun and challenging, but not difficult. It starts in a high dry grassland environment and takes you down into a canyon With a beautiful stream at the bottom. The Park Service has put a lot of effort into rope handrails to be used in both descending and ascending the canyon. There were park rangers at the bottom of the canyon and at the Mirador above the canyon who were both very friendly and gave us a lot of information about the area.
We took Route 8 to the Canyon and came back via Route 98. We found both routes to be easily accessible in a 2-wheel drive passenger car. There are gravel/dirt roads that access the canyon from Route 8 and Route 98 and, again, these are navigable in a passenger car but must be driven more slowly than on a paved road. Be aware that route 98 is not a paved road but a dirt/gravel road.
We highly recommend this hike. We also recommend looking for birds on the way back on route 98. We saw southern screamers, rheas, and lots of ducks and water fowl on our way back to Treinta Y Tres.

Great hike if you don’t mind a bit of scrambling/climbing in sections. Well marked and easy to follow.

There are not many hilly spots in Uraguay and so it is worth the 25 kilometre drive down dirt roads to visit this place. Entrance fees are only 30 pesos and then you have access to this wild valley. You can drive on in to the park and then take the 500 metre or so walk to the viewing platform and look down in to the valley to see the deep river valley and watch the vultures soar or take the very much more strenuous option of climbing down in to the valley and doing the circuit including cooling off in the cascade

The Quebrada is about 35km north of Treinta y Tres. There are two ways to get there: one is on a well cared for dirt road and the other is on a washboarded, pot-holed, cow grazing, greater rhea surrounded, slow-moving, gaucho road. If you're not in a hurry and have a car that can handle it, I recommend the gaucho road - if you want to get there in about 40 minutes, I recommend the other.
When you get there there will be an administrative house with an attendant on duty. You'll need to sign in and pay a small fee ($U50) as it's an nationally protected wilderness area. There's a map of the trail and paradas on the desk in the admin building which I suggest photographing. Then the administrator will open the gate and let you drive in about 1km to the parking area. Then you'll walk to the trail head where you'll see two signs pointing to the two directions (the trail makes a loop, so either way you choose will lead back to the head).
The round trip takes about 2 hours. We saw the vultures, an little armadillo (called a Mulita), and some other beautiful birds, trees, and flowers.
I highly recommend making this trip. If you're coming from Montevideo, take Ruta 8 and it will be about a 4 hour trip total.

My daughter and I rode horses for 3 hours to get there. We then walked to the Gorge, which was beautiful with loads turkey vultures soaring. We had nice lunch at the home of a local lady, before riding 3 hours back to Estancia Pinos del la Quabrada.

Adriana
