Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Calvary of Banska Stiavnica is one of the most beautiful Baroque calvaries. It can be seen from everywhere because it stands at the top of the Scharfenberg (Sharp) Hill above the town. It was built 1744-1751. It's renovated and it's a must-see attraction even for not religious people, too. It consists of 19 chapels, 2 churches, the Holy Stairs and sculpture of The Virgin Mary of Seven Sorrows under the cross and in additional it's the most impressive view to this town and area. It's very popular, so we climbed up there. It's not very hard but you need good walking shoes. It's worth it, don't miss it!

This sign is a must see in Banska Stiavnica. A car can be parked for free at a Calvary infopoint and the way up is doable for almost anyone. I suggest snrakers or sth closed for a footware since small loose rock can make your way up not so smooth. In the end, the view is spectacular : calm nature, the panoramatic overview on the whole town, "Beliansky Tajch" mine pond nearby and, most of all, the vibe of the spiritual origin!

Beautifully reconstructed place over Banska Stiavnica. Can be nice during the day or evening as it is lighted. Walk can take 15 -20min. Place is very photogenic in any season.

This is certainly a place to visit if you are in the area.
We visited it in 2019 and some part was still in renovation.
From the summit you have an extraordinary view on Banska Stiavnica

Worth to visit if you´re around. The place is charming. Lovely energy.
It is better to go by car and leave it at the parking place at the entrance to the hill.
You will have a nice walk and beautiful views.

Most underestimated by guidebooks, the Calvary is a serie of chapels picturesquely set on a green hill. Currently under renovation, it will certainly earn 5 stars when the renovation is finished. Nevertheless it is worth visiting even now - a lovely quiet place with an atmosphere of tranquility... Highly recommended.
Be careful though - it has no facilities whatsoever.

really unusual place to visit. sadly it was closed when we were here in april but the walk here alone was very good. it isn't actually as much as it looks like it is from the photos - it is very doable if you take it slow. enjoy :)

A great place to visit when you are in Stiavnica....small walk uphill and you can enjoy the view of the whole town.
Plus, its a place of contemplation, spend some time in prayer.

This is a must do if you're in the area! It is an absolutely stunning place. The photo that Tripadvisor currently displays does not give you a good idea of the site. I learnt there that a Calvary “is a type of Christian sacred place, built on the slopes of a hill, composed by a set of chapels, usually laid out in the form of a pilgrims' way. It is intended to represent the passion of Jesus Christ and its name after the Calvary, the hill in Jerusalem where, according to tradition, Jesus was crucified.” (Thanks Wikipedia).
The Calvary here has more than 20 buildings. It was built in 1744–1751. Restoration has been underway since 2008 and is almost finished. It’s absolutely stunning, plus there are great views from up top.
If you visit the new castle first, and maybe some other high spots, you can see the Calvary from afar - stunning!
The visitor centre at the bottom of the hill was great. We parked outside it, went in to get the free parking permit (as the signs instructed). The staff member working there was very helpful, and said that after our visit to the Calvary, to come back to the information centre to watch a 5 minute video with English subtitles and buy a hot drink. We did just that! The video was very interesting, telling a lot of the story about the massive restoration efforts, the earlier deterioration and pillaging of the Calvary. There are bathrooms at the information centre too, and a souvenir shop.
