About
The Mining Open – Air Museum with 40 000 visitors a year is one of the most popular sites in the region. On the ground the exposition shows old mining buildings, equipment, machines and geological history. Millions years ago here was the biggest volcano in Middle Europe. The most interesting part is the mine. Equipped with helmet, mining coat and lamp, you will go 60 meters deep and during a 1,5 km walk learn about the hard work of miners from Middle Age until the end of the 20th century.

Very nice experience. Spent morning there. Got information about mining, life and work of miners. Also learn something about mineralogy and geology of area. Very nice playground for kids. Because not all of us speak Slovak, we got piece of paper with English explanation and contents. You can walk there (be careful on busy road) from town by road (about 20-30 minutes).

Very well made underground exhibition. You go into the real mine, not just some reconstructed one. So do not forget warm clothes and closed shoes.

Zero... The half of the group was not slovak. But the guide was only talking on slovak language, there was nothing to enjoy on the trip. There was not even a minimal info for foreigners, not even an audio guide or boards.

I enjoyed going round museum It was laid out well ,including the open air part downstairs. I was pleasantly surprised to see some of the information on the walls was in English. Best of all there was a hand guide in different languages and this was excellent.

Banska Stiavnica itself is very pretty. It's a steep uphill walk to the museum if you park outside the city centre. Make sure you book it in advance as the ticket is time specific and if you want your tour in English as not many slot are provided. I learned a lot about mining and I found the whole thing fascinating

Very interesting tour inside a mine. You learn a lot about mining, their way of life, etc. If you are an English speaker, you should book a tour in advance (they charge 15 Euros for an English speaking guide).

As the whole region of this areas history is mining, we were told to visit the open air mining museum. It doses not sound that exciting but we book a private tour, with an English speaking guide and had a great trip.
You are given raincoats and hard hats which are needed as you are led through the twists and turns of the mine following the cart tracks.
The whole tour takes about 90 minutes, it was unlike anything we have done before.
Well worth the visit.

We called in advance to reserve two tickets as they are selling fast. You need to buy tickets for specific time. Tours are every hour. Adult ticket is €6 each and then we paid €15 extra for an English guide. That was the best thing we could do. If you don't speak Slovak I strongly recommend to book English guide in advance. (I am not sure if they have guides who speak other languages though). We were lucky we asked for it 15 minutes before the start of tour. It meant we did not have to join big group of people and we had our own personal tour through the mine. We were even taken to few places which usual groups don't go and we could ask as many questions as we wanted. Our guide Richard made this experience truly exceptional. History of this mining region is really interesting and you spend more than hour in the mine. As it is dirty and wet down there you will be given long raincoat, helmet and torch. If you are even an average height you will be grateful for helmet as some corridors can be rather low.

We were very lucky to be able to join a smaller group tour in English - we paid an extra 5 euros for this and it was completely worth it as it meant we were given fascinating insights in to what it was like to work in a gold and silver mine in our native language from the fluent and knowledgeable Slovak guide - who was able to use a lot of technical mining terms not in his native tongue with real flair - as well as try out sifting through mined rock for seams of gold, cramming ourselves in to the tiny miners' train and even the miners' underground toilet. You are equipped with a helmet and long protective coat and some members of the party had lamps. The temperature underground is a constant 8 degrees. This wouldn't be great for small children or anyone with mobility issues as there were a lot of stairs to climb - both up and down. I'd also recommend you wear sturdy shoes as you'll be on sometimes uneven or wet rock under foot. I genuinely didn't know what to expect from this tour but if you are able to get on to a tour in English it is well worth it.
