About
The Mining Open – Air Museum with 40 000 visitors a year is one of the most popular sites in the region. On the ground the exposition shows old mining buildings, equipment, machines and geological history. Millions years ago here was the biggest volcano in Middle Europe. The most interesting part is the mine. Equipped with helmet, mining coat and lamp, you will go 60 meters deep and during a 1,5 km walk learn about the hard work of miners from Middle Age until the end of the 20th century.

This was a lovely experience. The tour of the mines was amazing (we spent a bit more than an hour roaming the tunnels and familiarizing ourselves with the history of mining) and our tour guide was very engaging. He spoke good English and provided just the right amount of information about the history of mining techniques. Very fun and informative. Everything was just right.

An excellent mining museum with some fascinating exhibits. The geology section is great for explaining geology in general and for the volcanic caldera in which the museum sits. The 'play' mine for younger children is also very good.
The video explaining the working of the water pressure engine is one of the best videos that I've seen in a mining museum.
The underground tour into the old mine is well laid out with a good mix narrow and steep levels. The group I was with was quite large (numbers not size) and we spent too long in the chamber at the bottom of the steps by the shaft so it was a bit of a race to get round all the machinery in the rest of the mine.
If you are driving there, there isn't much parking space, but that seems to be par for course for the Banska Stiavnica area where non-residents are not encouraged to park in the town.

Very nice experience. Spent morning there. Got information about mining, life and work of miners. Also learn something about mineralogy and geology of area. Very nice playground for kids. Because not all of us speak Slovak, we got piece of paper with English explanation and contents. You can walk there (be careful on busy road) from town by road (about 20-30 minutes).

Very well made underground exhibition. You go into the real mine, not just some reconstructed one. So do not forget warm clothes and closed shoes.

Zero... The half of the group was not slovak. But the guide was only talking on slovak language, there was nothing to enjoy on the trip. There was not even a minimal info for foreigners, not even an audio guide or boards.

I enjoyed going round museum It was laid out well ,including the open air part downstairs. I was pleasantly surprised to see some of the information on the walls was in English. Best of all there was a hand guide in different languages and this was excellent.

Banska Stiavnica itself is very pretty. It's a steep uphill walk to the museum if you park outside the city centre. Make sure you book it in advance as the ticket is time specific and if you want your tour in English as not many slot are provided. I learned a lot about mining and I found the whole thing fascinating

Very interesting tour inside a mine. You learn a lot about mining, their way of life, etc. If you are an English speaker, you should book a tour in advance (they charge 15 Euros for an English speaking guide).

As the whole region of this areas history is mining, we were told to visit the open air mining museum. It doses not sound that exciting but we book a private tour, with an English speaking guide and had a great trip.
You are given raincoats and hard hats which are needed as you are led through the twists and turns of the mine following the cart tracks.
The whole tour takes about 90 minutes, it was unlike anything we have done before.
Well worth the visit.
