The trail is better to be hiked clockwise. It starts at the west end of the parking lot, a big curve to the foot of the Dome. There is no clear path to the top of the dome, but most people will start to climb when they meet the first fork , left side leads you to the top of Dome, it is less steep. The right fork leads along the edge of the meadow to the Tuolumne River. Once you climb to the top, and plan to descend the dome, you just head straight North, you will reach the trail along the river. Follow the trail and the water sound, you reach the Secret Tuolumne River Cascade. It is a picturesque cascade and a good swimming pit.
Once you are done with the cascade, you can follow the trail between the river and dome, and return to the parking lot in a mile. Be sure to check the Cathedral Peak and other surrounding mountains along the return path.

My four kids (7,9,13,15) loved this! We climbed straight up the side and took some awesome photos on top before a storm scared us away. We easily spent nearly two hours here

Pothole Dome sits on the edge of Tuolumne Meadow near the trailhead for Cathedral Lakes. Stay on the trail, let the Meadow heal, but get out to to the granite and walk up the gentle slope. There are great views of the Meadow and the surrounding mountains. It is a simple and quick hike and likely the easiest Dome to “climb”.

Right on the western edge of Tuolumne Meadows sits this huge rock face that juts up above the meadows that provides amazing views of the meadows and surrounding mountains. It is a steep climb up to the top, but can probably be accomplished for most people in under 10-15 min. The views on top are worth the effort to get there. It's not nearly as busy as other places in Tuolumne Meadows either, so that is also a plus. Definitely make the stop if you get the opportunity to!

We didn't find this hike in any of the trail guides but the Park Ranger at the visitor center recommended it. So off we went. Boy were we happy we took the ranger's advise. The trail head is not well marked. It is a bit west of Cathedral Lake. There is parking in a little pull off as well as along the road.

Follow the trail a bit around the edge of the meadow and then around the dome a bit. Once you get to the relatively gentle rise of the Dome begin your hike up. There is not a specific mard trail up the dome you just pick your spot and start the hike up. It is somewhat steep up the dome but take your time and you will be glad you took the time to get to the top. It is a fun hike up but the real pay off is at the top.

Oh what view!!! You have 360 views of the area and what views they are. Check out the pictures. They speak louder than words. Amazingly there are very few people that take the time to hike the dome so it is not crowded in the least at the top.

Wonderful views of Tuolumne Meadow and the surrounding countryside can be had for minimal effort. The walk to the dome is a short and easy one, and climbing the granite dome looked slightly intimidating but was easy as well. Well worth the stop!

We enjoyed our visit to pothole dome. It was a bit of a breathless climb up for the grandparents of two small energetic boys. Beautiful views up here tho. Loved looking down into the meadow and the winding stream.

A very short trail takes you to and around the edge of Pothole Dome. There was so much water in the meadows that we decided to just climb around on the dome instead of getting our boots wet continuing on the trail. We walked to the far north side of the dome to get great views of the back country and then to the top which is the western side for great views of Cathedral Peak and others.

Just visited Yosemite from 7/9 to 7/12. There were still several areas closed to hiking due to snow/ice. Made the short hike across the meadow and up to the top of Pothole Dome and was rewarded with fantastic views of the area.

This is a lovely hike - about 2.5 miles round trip, not much elevation gain. However, Tuolumne Meadows is at about 8,500' so you may find it a bit more strenuous than it seems. If you have questions about the trail (or anything else about Tuolumne!)speaking to someone at the ranger station will be helpful.
