If you are a hiker this is worth the trip. Sure it gets steep and there are plenty of switchbacks, but that’s why we come here. It’s nowhere near as crowded as some of the hikes around the valley. Filter some cold water at the top of the falls and kick back for lunch with a great view. Plunge into the deep pools at the top of the falls to cool off in a hurry. Definitely worth the hike if you’ve got the legs for it.

The trail to Upper Chilnualna Fall is fairly consistent in its gradient, about 600’ per mile. But this is a great trail if you like bear clover, also called Mountain Misery. It was in bloom for our early June hike and was lovely to see. There are numerous views of Wawona from the trail as well as views of the cascades of the waterfall. Note that there are some open unshaded sections of the trail, so we got pretty hot.

A highlight for me was seeing a baby rattlesnake along the trail. I am afraid it is too close to people, but I did not try to pick it up and move it to a more unpopulated location.

While at the top, we picnicked with a view, checked out campsites, took lots of photos, and admired all the cascades. We did not choose to swim in any of the potholes or pools of water.

Note that the Lower Chilnualna Fall Trail is short & somewhat steep but ‘worth’ the walk. The Upper Fall Trail is definitely a hike rather than a walk.

Having been to Yosemite many, many times, I am always looking for something new and different. This was it! The road to the trailhead took me to an area of Yosemite where I had never been before. The hike to the lower falls was reasonably easy! We didn't go very far up the steps as my wife wasn't really up for them. Nonetheless a nice short hike!

It’s amazing. You can either go to the lower falls, which is a downhill to the bridge (easily done with a dog stroller in 10 minutes) or go up the falls on a strenuous hike.
My vote is the lower falls... or more accurately, my middle aged hip and knee voted.
Well worth the time.

This was one of our favorite hikes! NO Crowds, not too steep, but great views, soft trails and rushing waterfalls. Hard to beat! Watch for Mountain lions!

This hike is not for the faint of heart. Hiked it early June when the water was rushing. It was fun.

This was a surprising hike for me. I wanted to explore the Wawona area and stay away from the crowds. This was the perfect hike for just that. The surprise...it was a fantastic hike. You get your first reward only 10 minutes into the hike. A big lower falls that was refreshingly cool on a warm day. Keep going and you will continue to see beautiful landscape without the crowds. Take time to enjoy the hike and soak in all the nature.

My visit in June 2019 was, as usual, short and sweet. The hike to the Lower Falls is somewhat steep but not long.

There was more water in Chilnualna Creek than I ever remember seeing, and I’ve been walking up to this waterfall for many many years. It was a fabulous view.

We spent about an hour total hiking up to these falls and got some great pictures. There were even some flowers still around from the spring rains/melting. I highly recommend getting off the beaten tourist path to do something like this!

Looking for a place to enjoy Nature in Yosemite without the usual crush of summertime crowds? Chilnualna Falls, in Wawona, is a great option. You can enjoy the lower level of the falls without taking a strenuous hike, or head up the trail for a decent workout
