Interesting story well told. One needs to fully understand the story by visiting the Whitman Mission, but this is an excellent visual introduction.

What a bonus to find this hidden attraction! The painting depict the hisstory of the mission. It is a sad subject, but we were awed to realize all 30-some paintings were done by David Manual. This attraction is on the 2nd floor of the hotel and we wish we had been informed of it by staff. Instead, we found it... More

A history of Marcus and his wife and how they came to arrive at Walla Walla and what they had accomplished and how it all ended all in about 30 paintings with story placards accompanying each. Located on the second floor of the hotel. Very interesting

This luxury hotel, in the heart of Walla Walla’s historic downtown and thoroughly renovated at the turn of the 21st century, is named after missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, who came from upstate New York to this part of the Oregon/Washington Territory in the 1830s to work with the local Cayuse people. The 35 oil paintings by David Manuel (on... More

The Marcus Whitman Hotel will please ANY traveler with rooms and repaste. The 2nd floor gallery is a bonus that is a 40 portrait depiction of the founding of the mission and background that caused the massacre. Save an hour after dinner for it. Or lunch.

First of all, don't go expecting to see great art but it's vivid and detailed and the captions are full of information about the Whitmans and their nearby ill-fated mission. All the works are by the same artist and the faces are not the best, but it is worth visiting for the history.

The display of about 35 paintings is a good reminder of how difficult it was to build a life and prosper when the region was being settled in the mid-1800's and the challenges encountered when two cultures meet. We should be grateful for the struggle and sacrifices made by those that proceeded us. Recommended!

Thankfully a hotel worker told us about this gallery. The many paintings depict the story of Marcus Whitman and his wife Narcissa who were missionaries to the area. The sad and tragic story is told in vivid, beautiful paintings. There's no charge for this. If you like art and history, this is a must stop.

We had at first misunderstood what *kind* of art gallery we'd be visiting in the Marcus Whitman. The entire gallery is full of paintings of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman's lives in the Walla Walla Valley. After visiting the gallery a visit to the Whitman Mission is a must.

The Marcus Whitman Hotel is a throwback to a different era and worth a visit just to see the lobby. However, the second floor is home to an art gallery depicting the Whitman's journey, work and (spoiler alert!) ultimate demise through a sizable series of paintings. The paintings are highly detailed and - parents be warned - spare no detail... More
