It's a stop on the tour of the Vicksburg National Military Park. It is a tribute to the soldiers from Illinois. It's beautiful. It is one of the largest in the park.

I am not sure why they are calling this the "Vicksburg National Monument" when it is actually the Illinois Monument erected by the state of Illinois to commemorate the Illinois soldiers who fought here during the battle and siege of Vicksburg in 1863. It is an impressive structure that is very large in size with 47 steps up to the... More

Our family saw the Illinois Memorial while visiting Vicksburg National Military Park. It is stop number 2 on the campaign trail road through the park. It is the largest monument in the park and the most impressive civil war monument that I have seen. There are 47 steps to the rotunda which is one step for each day of the... More

Beautiful tile work on floor. Good memorial to those fallen soldiers displayed by infantry. The roof is open to the sky so you might find yourself trying to figure out how it doesn't fill with water when it rains .Awesome echo inside the memorial-bring your singing voice! Nice photo stop too.

I find it interesting that not one TripAdvisor review mentions the fact that the name of this monument is listed incorrectly here. This structure is NOT the Vicksburg National Monument. It's one of dozens of monuments constructed by individual states whose citizens fought and died in the battles at Vicksburg. This particular monument was constructed by the State of Illinois... Beautiful but lots of steps. Good exercise. This is in the battlefield. We did walk up and take pictures.

Explore and immerse yourself in Civil War history. This monument is representative of other monuments scattered throughout the park. The battle for Vicksburg was strategic to both sides of the campaign. Take time to reflect on the many names inscribed on this monument. Highly recommend!

The Military Park has so many monuments and memorials to the many units engaged in the siege and the Cemetery with its endless markers, but the monument is outstanding, with its list of thousands of casualties during the long bloody battle.
