Doris Duke's home is stunning. The location is one of the prettiest on Ohau. Her collection is as good or better than many museums.

which is in reality a museum of middle east art, architecture and culture. You must make a reservation at the Honolulu Art Museum, then go by bus/van for a docent-led tour. Worth the $25 per person.

Shangri-La is Doris Duke's creation of heaven on earth and she was certainly successful. When an appraiser told her that the estate furnishings were worth over a billion dollars, she decided to have it made a museum after her death. Everything about Shangri-La is extraordinary in terms of location, architectural design, interior design and decoration. Duke collected art from the... More

You have to go to the Honolulu Art Museum to make arrangements and hop on the shuttle to this unique estate, but it is totally worth it!

Excursion to Doris Duke’s Shangri-La. This tour, which cost twenty-five dollars, was something we had to reserve ahead of time and the only available time was 9:00, so to avoid traffic we arose at 4:30 and hit the road at 6:00 A.M. The tour starts at the Honolulu Museum of Art, which is quite impressive in itself, then shuttles out... More

Shangri La is a visual, educational marvel. Not to be missed if you would like to be in a museum, where Doris Duke once lived. She picked out every piece. She LOVED this home. The docents are well trained and enjoy sharing this with you. I have gone several times and often a couple of the visitors are scholars in... More

Although not quintessentially Hawaiian, it is a fascinating insight into the power of what unlimited funds and a passion for Islamic art can achieve. Even though it is a very eclectic collection of pieces, it is put together in a way which 'works' in Doris Duke's private home. I found it really beautiful.

This home was designed and built by Doris Duke the tobacco heiress. She collected Islamic artifacts which she integrated into the decor. The location is right on the ocean near Diamond Head. Admission must be book in advance through the Honolulu Art Galkery. Your tour stars there and you are bused to the location.
