First thing to know - as a tourist, you have to reserve a time slot these days (since May 2022). Easy to do online but not a lot of visitors know this - we were lucky that someone happened to mention it on another tour we were on. It's a $5 pp charge + parking so not expensive but they are strict - no reservation, no hike. We struggled to get a reservation at first with Parking but did get one when I removed parking. We took a cab there and UBER-d back.
The hike itself is moderately steep in places but for most people won't be too challenging. Our 11 year old son had no problems and there were far younger kids heading up there! The view at the top is stunning.
Best to go early (we did the 6-7am hike starting around 6.30am) to avoid the heat and get the sunrise. Really beautiful!!!

They are now requiring (since mid May) that all non-residents make a reservation before coming to the park. This info wasn’t clear in any reviews, and we had to go twice, once to be turned back. Luckily we got another walk-in for later in the day, but parking was unavailable. Other than monument parking, there is a tiny lot before the tunnel, but I think the option of just waiting it out while someone leaves may end up in you loosing the reservation slot. Those are in 30 minute intervals for entrance.

The checkin folks appeared nice, but looked tired. I think as they became the face of turning people back. I wish this info was clear in latest reviews here too.

Anyway… this is an amazing hike and really nicely maintained. A lot of people can do it. I saw young kids and older folks. Just pace yourself. It’s not accessible though. Bring water and enjoy the gorgeous views.

When you go up, do take the recommended route to the left. It has better views. If you want like we did, under the very top overlook is a battery room, and from there you can take fun spiral stairs down, and this will bring you to the top of the steep staircase you saw on the right when you went left. We went down that way to make a loop. You do you!

Must go place while in Honolulu.

A friend and I hiked into the volcanic crater and up the side of the mountain. The hike is strenuous at times, but oh the view that awaits those who make it to the top. You will definitely want to take lots of pictures. I would also suggest taking a backpack with lots of water and some snacks. The 1.5-mile hike takes about an hour to do, and you will need to stay hydrated. This is a must do experience for first time visitors.

Great views of Waikiki. Recommend to go early to avoid crowds and heat. Take water bottle and make sure to reward yourself with a dole whip once you come down!

Would have rated it higher but hey, I’m unfit.
It’s a bit of a trek to get to the top but as others have said, it’s well worth it.
It wasn’t until the stair section that I really struggled and that’s more due to bad knees.
A couple of things to be aware of.
1. Fees have gone up and booking online is highly recommended.
2. Go as early as you can to avoid the afternoon heat.
3. SUNBLOCK
4. Be prepared to wait a while at the top if you’re looking for that instagram picture as everyone else has the same idea and it’s quite a small area up there.

If you are from out of state, make sure that you reserve "access" to Diamond Head in order to hike it as well as to be able to park BEFORE the date that you are planning on going. It is too far to walk to from Waikiki (I.M.O.) when you include the hike as well as the return walk to the beaches.

There is a new requirement to have a reservation to hike Diamond Head. We went not knowing this. What a mess. We were allowed to even park. Do your homework first.

Lovely hike with some stunning views across Hawaii, this is a must if your into hiking and want to get away from the beach, the hike up the trail takes maybe 40 mins it's a mile hike that gets a little steep at times, but suitable for all.
The old pillbox at the top would have provided very wide angle of view for the military overlooking for foreign invaders
