About
This dormant volcano crater is one of Honolulu’s major natural landmarks, known for its history, amazing hikes, and stunning coastal views. The way to the summit is an easy-to-moderate hike up—though there's a steep flight of steps—and you'll be treated to some of the best views on the island. There are also many lookouts surrounding the crater. If you have limited mobility, don't worry, multiple other hikes within the park are accessibility friendly. It can get busy (and hot!) so try to reach early in the morning and bring sunscreen and plenty of water. Online reservations are required for non-residents but are often included in guided tours of Diamond Head. – Tripadvisor

    Gorgeous view!
The trek up Diamond Head is worth it for the view of the coastline and the Honolulu area. The path is somewhat rough and uneven not to mention fairly steep. There are places to rest as you go. A moderate level of fitness is best but if you're prepared to take your time, pretty much anyone could accomplish it and be happy they did!

    Great View From the Top
If you are in Honolulu make sure you do the Diamond Head Walk. It is best to do it earlier in the morning as there is no shade along the way. Make sure you pre book the time you would like to visit online before you go. Depending on how fit you are, the walk could be a little strenuous, we are in our early 60's but found it ok, just take your time and you will be fine. The walk is well worth the view when you get to the top :)

I made it to the top!
Initially was aiming for a sunrise hike but alas, the day I had a reservation for this it was of course overcast and raining. I still went and glad I did. The light rain falling made this hike more bearable to me. Lots of steps!!! Took my time and made it to the top. I don't think I would have made it all the way if the sun was out in full force.

    An amazing day out!
We only had one day left so we had to choose either Bishop museum or Diamond head crater. We wanted to do one outdoor activity everyone was talking about so we decided to go here. We took bus number 2 from Waikiki which took us directly to the starting point. It was a very easy walk, beautiful scenery and nice day out. The only thing I wasn’t aware of was that you need to make a booking in advance to enter! I didn’t realize it until I saw the sign. I asked some people coming back from the crater and they said they didn’t make a booking either but it wasn’t that busy that day so they just walked in and paid $5. You might want to check how busy it is on the day you visit. The weather was very breezy and a little bit cloudy so a perfect day for hiking! We enjoyed the views and took a lot of photos saw many birds and even mongoose!!

    Must visit Diamond Head!
Always great to visit Diamond Head. The walk can be challenging for some, but totally worth the hike. The views from the top are spectacular and the trip back in time to WW2 is amazing. You MUST get a reservation prior to entry if going in a vehicle to the walk area. No big deal, can be done online and you can easily get your reservation for the next day if need be. If you can walk a little over a mile at a moderate climb, negotiate about 50-60 stairs you can do this. There are benches to sit on if you need to take a break on the way up. Bring a small bottle of water! Use sunscreen and have fun. Restrooms on side at the parking area.

Stop to rest as often as needed, beautiful views!
We had reserved the 8am-10 window, and we’re glad we did. It was hot enough at that time of the day; it would be even hotter later in the day. Stopped a couple of times at viewpoints to rest, no hurry, but made it all the way to the top. Views are beautiful!

    Lovely hike!
Perfect 8am hike up Diamond Head. Even at that time it was pretty hot on the way up and the first half of the ascent is the hardest bit! Fantastic view from the top and very interesting with the WW2 pill boxes. Parking was well-organised and plentiful. A great but sweaty way to start the day!

    Invigorating 2 mile hike.
Great hike in the evenings. Saw some people resting because of the incline but doable. Lots of switchbacks to lessen the feel. Just go slow and enjoy the view. My round trip from parking lot was 2.2 miles. We are seniors in relatively good health and exercise regularly.

    Diamond Head - Spectacular
First of all, parking at this location is strictly a premium. If you plan on driving definitely make reservations well in advance. As for me....I Uber it to/from the site. The adventure is hiking to the craters submit. The hike is about 1.6 miles round trip with some "very" strange twists, turns and stair climbing. Some would tell you that this is a "modest nature walk." Modest...not way. it is not an easy hike by any means. You will be sucking air (smile) But once you get to the top (and catch your breath) you won't be disappointed. The view at the top is just SPECTACULAR, REALLY. It's breath-taking just o look out at the ocean. You won't spend a lot of time at the top but when you do come down you can boast that "I did it. I climbed Diamond Head crater. "

Climbing the stairs to Diamond Head
There were many stairs up to the top of the hill but the view was really worth it. Too many visitors sometimes were a bit disturbing, it is better to visit early. We combined it with renting e-bikes, so we could circle around Diamond Head and visit some beaches.

Diamond Head is an Oahu icon that mixes some of the most beautiful views from mauka to makai, interesting history, good exercise and at the end of the day.. you’re hiking a volcano (how cool is that?!).

Recommend planning ahead with plenty of water, shoes with good traction and sunscreen since you do have to work a little for the summit beauty with a steep elevation gain and you’re completely exposed to the sun almost the entire time. Going in the morning will be less hot, but is usually more crowded.

If you’re local, it’s an easy, cost-free entry at your desired time with your HI ID, but if you’re coming from the mainland or elsewhere, ensure you plan ahead and arrange your entry reservation online and determine your logistical approach (self-park vs. Uber or taxi, etc.) The parking lot in the crater can fill up quick, especially on weekends. Alternatively, you can hike in from outside the crater, but this also means a much longer outing and may fatigue those who don’t hike often.

Bottom line: Be smart with proper preparation and enjoy this Oahu must-see attraction that deserves every bit of its appeal and notoriety.

I used this site to book a reservation to the state park, your representative sold me a tour with headsets and entrance to the park itself for $5.00 per-person , which there were 12 of us including grandkids. Great until we arrived and were told the vouchers sent to my phone were only good for the headsets !! We had to pay an addition $5.00 per head to enter. I went to the admission both to complain but was informed this has happened before and to cancel the headset, which she said is on record. Then contact VIATOR for a refund ,, I have attempted to get satisfaction but have been getting a big run around. NO REFUND as of yet. Don`trust the VIATOR..

Great value for money. Basic facilities only, no cafeteria. Crater path is narrow & gets busy with lots of people climbing

Did the hike to the rim of Diamond head. I'm 68, in pretty fair shape, did well on the climb. Take a bottle of water, you'll need it. Had to take a break half way up the 99 steps but was so worth the views! Went at 9 in the morning, was pretty warm until we got up and out of the crater where there were more breezes. That was definitely better. Not sure I would want to do it if it were much warmer later in the day. Lots of places to takes rests on the way up if you need to. Don't hesitate to go, just take your time. We saw all ages from toddlers to folks older than I. Uneven terrain so watch where you step.

Overall a beautiful hike with helpful information posted throughout and unique vies of the crater. It only took 1 hour but if you stop and take more pictures or do it a bit slower it's probably 1.5 hours.
First, you need a reservation. When I looked the morning of, I was only able to get 2-4:00 PM because everything else had been booked. That being said, because most people don't like that time (I assume heat!) I think it was less crowded than other reviews seem to imply.
I think this is a hike for most abilities because it is mostly paved and the most difficult part is stairs. At the top you can actually go up a steep flight of stairs to ender the fire station and then climb out to the top which was very cool (but easy to skip for those who are a little less comfortable on stairs). The view at the top of Waikiki is really beautiful and a nice reward!

This was my second time doing this hike. Make reservations in advance to get your desired time. We went at 8am and while there were people, it wasn’t nearly as busy as going later in the day. Hike takes about an hour round trip. I thought it was very easy, but there are a few spots that some people may have a harder time on. Absolutely love the views at the top and there are lots of picturesque views on the way up.

Steep hike but so worth it. Uneven ground, lots of stairs. Recommend go early before the sun starts blazing. We are in out 50s and okay shape and took us an hour.
There is a brief tunnel you had to walk through. I have claustrophobia but I was able to come through it okay. You can stand and walk through it, but it is narrow.

This was a wonderful hike with gorgeous views. It was not too strenuous but did require good footing and the ability to climb multiple sets of stairs. There was a good breeze and a lot of friendly folks on the trail with us.

It’s a hike but the views are spectacular. Path is paved for a distance but then the terrain is rocky and uneven, at the end of the hike there are approximately 100 steps to climb. With this being said my 72 year old husband did the hike and was glad he completed it. I stopped at the end of the paved portion, I had just had a knee replaced and was concerned about the uneven terrain, I had also, completed the hike on two other occasions. Recommend making reservations with a tour group since parking and park entrance is very limited. The tour company we used dropped us off and gave us two hours to complete the hike up & back before picking us up, which was an adequate amount of time.
