Chateau-sur-Mer is a landmark of High Victorian architecture, furniture, wallpapers, ceramics and stenciling. It was the most palatial residence in Newport from its completion in 1852 until the appearance of the Vanderbilt houses in the 1890s.Chateau-sur-MerChateau-sur-Mer ballroom was built as an Italianate-style villa for China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore. Mr. Wetmore died in 1862, leaving the bulk of his fortune to his son, George Peabody Wetmore, and a generous allowance for his daughter, Annie Derby Wetmore. George married Edith Keteltas in 1869. During the 1870s, the young couple departed on an extended trip to Europe, leaving architect Richard Morris Hunt to remodel and redecorate the house in the Second Empire French style. As a result, Chateau-sur-Mer displays most of the major design trends of the last half of the 19th century.

Unlike many of the other Newport mansions, Chateau-sur-Mer was heavily renovated and added on to over the years, and it is somewhat disjointed on the inside as a result. Perhaps it was the generally darker Gothic style, a rainy day, and a somewhat dry (though knowledgable) guide, but this was certainly the least favorite of all the Newport mansions. As... More

During a wonderful recent visit to Newport, My husband and I were fortunate to tour the Chateau-sur-Mar just before it closed for the winter. The tour was extensive, and our knowledgeable guide provided the context for all that we saw. It was particularly nice to have someone present who could answer our questions about the house, its contents, and the... More

Excellent tour through this beautiful pre-Gilded Age home. Penney, our tour guide, was informative and gave us a different perspective on the house, the history, and the architecture. It was nice to have someone to answer questions and talk about the family members and give examples of what it was like during that time. Her knowledge and enthusiasm made this... More

The design and workmanship inside Chateau-sur-Mer is beautiful, and the story of the house and its residents is very interesting. Of the five houses that we toured, this was the only one that did not have an audio tour; guests move through the house together in a group. Our tour guide was a wealth of information, but the tour seemed... More

We particularly liked this tour because of the guide. She was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The Breakers has an audio tour which we did not care for as much.

In comparison with the frothy over-the-top mansions for which Newport is known, this house feels downright modest. The grounds are expansive but not special, though with some lovely mature trees. The house itself is quintessentially victorian: moody, dark, robustly modeled surfaces wherever you look. The tour was interesting, led by an engaging docent who had a wealth of knowledge.

This is a guided tour, approx. 45 min to an hour. Our tour guide was excellent, I wish we remembered her name. She gave so much information about the family history of the home, and some neat info about some of the other mansions as well and how they're intertwined. Not a bad reflection of the mansion or the tour...but,... More

If you are interested in things Victorian--grand, high-style Victorian, you will love Chateau sur Mer. If you're not, you will probably love it anyway, because it has so many different visual delights, woodwork, stained glass, wallpaper, anything A Victoriam might put in their house if their budget was unlimited. I was in Newport specifically for the architecture, so if that's... More

A smaller stately home. Amazing look up to floors above from first floor. Great tour of home and it's detailed wood work.

We've been to many of the Mansions but this was the first time here. Very unlike the others and the guided tour was first rate. The grounds are very nice.
