Overview
More
The Elms was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind made his fortune in the coal industry. In 1898, the Berwinds engaged Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a house modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'Asnieres (c.1750) outside Paris. Construction of The Elms was completed in 1901 at a cost reported at approximately $1.4 million. The interiors and furnishings were designed by Allard and Sons of Paris and were the setting for the Berwinds' collection of Renaissance ceramics, 18th century French and Venetian paintings, and Oriental jades.

We have been to the Elms a few times before and missed the Servant Life Tour until now. It was fantastic. Mr. Berwind was a man before his time. Lots of great information. Very cool to go to the servants quarters on the third floor...More

Very impressed with the grounds and the house. The self-guided audio tour was perfect because you could control he pace. Part of the $30 Winter Pass. Good deal to see four houses.

Very comprehensive description on audio guides. Amazing architecture, furnishings and art. Can see bathrooms, kitchen, all bedrooms in addition to public rooms.

Our favorite "cottage" in Newport. Elegant, without the overstated opulence of the more celebrated homes. The self guided audio tour is excellent, move along at your own pace and take in the craftsmanship and artistry of the Gilded Age. Learn how the Berwind family enjoyed...More

Simply beautiful as expected, still have to see it to appreciate. We had the self guided tour with headsets and was good but I would try to sign up for a guided tour as much more detail is lifted out.

This is one of the 'cottages' of the Newport elite. The tour is self-guided with a complimentary headset that is included with the ticket purchase. The basic tour takes about 30-40 minutes, but there are 'extras' available in the audio tour to explore in more...More

A beautiful mansion/cottage. The house is amazing from the architecture to the art work. To think, it was only used 6 weeks a year. Oh the beautiful Christmas decorations add to the beauty of this house. Must be one of the mansions on your list...More

There’s hardly anybody here but it’s equally as impressive as the breakers. Pretty close to the bottom end of the town.

It depends on you,if you want do it on your own through the audio aid...you can linger on taking the history slowly....anything between and hour or two...all depends on yr own interest.
