In Newport, RI, the leading architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries built magnificent mansions for the nation's social and financial elite. These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden.

We did the winter tour and only visited 3 of the mansions but well worth the money!! The Breakers is opulent and stunning; and the details!! Check out the doorknob of the front door, or the platinum painted panels or the ceilings and floors in any room!! Stunning. We went to the Elms and Marble House as well but the... More

Newport is filled with old mansions on huge estates. Our tour only visited this one but driving past so many more you could easily spend a day visiting more. Built by the Van der bilts at the end of the 19th century this is equal with anything I've seen in Europe. If you can get past the inequality of the... More

Holiday Mansion Tour was fabulous. All self guided, with earbuds. So many interesting stories, and glitter and gold beyond compare. Fascinating and gorgeous holiday trees, ceiling paintings, The sculptures, the moldings, the fresh flowers and that 15 ft. poinsettia tree at the Breakers are memorable, as well as the lighting, the old fashioned toys (Marble House), and the giant stuffed... We visited at least 5 of the mansions in one day. They were all very beautiful and well maintained. I recommend buying a membership if you plan to visit multiple properties and wearing comfortable shoes.

We visited 3 of the mansions: Breakers, Marble House, and Rosecliff. It was a beautiful day so we parked at the Breakers parking lot and walked to the other two from there. Each house had an audio tour which allowed you to tour the mansions at your own pace. The audio tours were excellent and full of interesting history. The... More

See as many mansions as you can. They show you a class of people no longer around. The interiors are beautiful and the grounds are amazing. Take the servants tour to see how the other half lived and served. We went into the Breakers, the Elms and the Marble House. Do not miss these beautiful "Cottages"!!

I took my daughter and two grandchildren to Rosecliff today, one of the Preservation Society's Mansions on Bellevue Avenue in Newport. The self guided audio tour included a viewing tablet and was easy to use, very informative, and a great help for the two boys. This is definitely one of the top 5 Mansions one should visit and tour the... More
