A great way to learn about the Naval and Maritime history of Newport. Vetting process and proper ID required.

We had a tour of this campus recently. It is so lovely. So much history! The ocean front campus has a beautiful view of the bridge. Some of the historic buildings have been renovated and are embedded with rich history of the previous officers from the US and around the world. The museum is a wealth of history and knowledge.... Displays were dated and not inspiring. Felt as if nothing has been done to update information in many, many years.

I contacted the museum for clearance in August for an October visit. Jim Telford was very helpful and I got all necessary info submitted. The day we wanted to visit I called ahead and was told they did not have our names cleared for entrance. I spoke with Mr. Telford and he was so nice to try to get things... More

I occasionally get assigned projects that send me to Navy bases. Some in the northeast were established in early-1800’s and have been open continuously since. Naval Station Newport is such a base with many old historical buildings from yesteryear. I love the architectural of old, which seemed to have died out in the mid-20th century in America. The view from... More

My husband and I wanted to visit the Naval War College Museum. On our way to Newport, RI, I called the phone number that was in the AAA Tour Guide. I asked the gentlemen who answered my call about the ID requirement, as the guide book said if you didn't have a military ID you had to get a security... More

You likely need a military ID to get on base to see the museum, however, it is worth the trip. Free parking, free admission. Great exhibits and lots of Navy history to review. If you are a history buff, you will thoroughly enjoy this museum.

Getting into the museum requires pre planning - visitors must submit social security numbers as part of a security check, and that takes a few days. But the wait is worth it. Not only are the views from the college spectacular, but the info in the museum is fascinating. Lots of presidential history, info about WW 2, and the war... More
