Just amazing! Our guide shared so many unusual facts it made my head spin. Just thinking about how many years, (120), to grow one inch, really put my concept of time in perspective.
The tour is not good for people who have trouble with steps...More
Luray Caverns has been drawing visitors for generations. Even today buses disgorge passengers at the entrance regularly. They include visitors from all over the globe.
The ticketing and management of groups of visitors is well organized and we purchased our tickets and were immediately added...More
I was looking forward to this place when I planned my holiday, it didn't disappoint, just one criticism the guides were a little over zealous in their don't touch that, don't do this.... strange when a new path is being mined through the caves
We chose these caverns out of all the options in the area for a few reasons: most of all, it was the extras that they went above and beyond on site.
We arrived mid-afternoon on a weekday: it was still extremely busy. We bought a...More

Interesting thought -- as they said on the tour, growth is one cubic inch per 120 years through minerals collecting as water passes through the mountain and resurfaces on the rocks (stalactites/mites/columns). They were discovered in 1878, or 140 years ago. This means that since their discovery and throughout all the years of the caverns becoming an attraction, they have grown only a little over one cubic inch.
