San Antonio did a nice job on the Alamo Plaza. The Alamo Plaza contains the Alamo chapel, the public plaza, and the surrounding commercial structures.

Anchored by the historic Alamo, this is the commercial area with restaurants, shops and hotels and it is well worth exploring on a visit to San Antonio. The Alamo deserves a visit when in town, but the nearby River Walk is the highlight of the city.

The Alamo Plaza in San Antonio, Texas, originally was part of the courtyard of the Alamo. Today, Alamo Plaza Historic District contains the Alamo chapel, the public plaza and the surrounding commercial structures built mainly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Located in the center of downtown San Antonio, adjacent to HemisFair Plaza and the San Antonio River, Alamo Plaza is the commercial center that developed around Texas' most famous shrine, the Alamo, the most visited tourist attraction in the state. The district originally included 27 buildings, including the 1857 Menger Hotel with its lavish three-story space in the lobby that is illuminated by a stained glass, leaded skylight; the 1872 Dreiss, Thompson and Company Building, a two-story, three-bay Victorian commercial structure built to serve as a drugstore; St. Joseph's Church and Rectory, a Gothic Revival limestone structure erected between 1868 and 1876 that is dominated by a central entrance tower with a slate and copper roof; the Lady Bird Johnson Fountain, dedicated in 1974; the 1909 Crockett Hotel, originally a six-story dwelling that added a seventh floor in 1927; the 1883 Dullnig Building, a three-story Italianate-style brick structure built to serve as a grocery and dry goods store; the 1891 Reuter Building, a four-story rectangular structure with an angled corner on the main facade which contained the original entrance; the 1891 San Antonio Turn Verein, a two-story brick building with a hardwood parquette floor covering the rear staircase landing that is laid in a bright pattern of contrasting colors; and the 1940 Cenotaph, a 60-foot-tall memorial to the defenders of the Alamo with a white marble shaft atop a 40x12-foot granite base.

The new Mission Gate and Lunette is currently under construction at the Alamo Plaza. Do not plan on driving in front of the property.

This is a well maintained space and shows immense respect for the mission and all that it stands for in Texas. There was a lot of construction when I went but did not take away from the site as a whole. Not to be missed in San Antonio.

The plaza is beautiful and is still walkable with great views of the Alamo, but a portion in front of the Alamo is undergoing construction, with a road closure,

We did a quick tour of the Alamo. It was very interesting and there was so much to see. The line to go inside the church itself was very long so we skipped that. We did watch the video on the history of the Alamo. It was alright but I would not have understood the importance and breath of the history if I had not prepped myself before going. There is a great podcast available called "New History of Old San Antonio" by Brandon Seale which is very comprehensive if you are a history buff. Overall it was a wonderful experience.

The Plaza is surrounded by buildings which takes away for the Alamo as a monument of history. It is pedestrian friendly and there was a demonstration to musket and long rifle shooting while were there.

Busy square with lots of people. Irritatingly loud, with some guy with a mike and amps rambling on about something he was mad about, and another very loud, and amped, rap group. Mostly a place to get through between the Menger Hotel and the Alamo. We didn't spend much time hanging around.

I parked at Rivercenter Mall - $4 1st hr, $18 max, right by Riverwalk, short walk to Alamo - also shopping, movies at mall.
