This is a hike best not taken by novices. It is a challenging ascent to the top, an almost vertical climb towards the end. But the rewards are spectacular views of Tucson. Take lots of water and sunscreen and count for several hours of hard...More

The Finger Rock Trail is strenuous, and good for cool fall or spring days. I got quite overheated on this trail, but had plenty of water, and managed to get down without the rescue crews.

This trail is a thigh buster and will get your heart pumping. The first 30 minutes of the trail isn't too bad. Then, you come to a wall of switchbacks that go on for a couple thousand feet of incline. It is a great challenge...More

If you are an experienced hiker, this trail should be easier for you. I do see families out walking but the kids are usually pretty worn out. Some areas have tougher terrain than others but you can choose to just go part way in and...More

This trail starts out rather easy hiking (go to the Springs about 1 mile) and back (the first pic is at the Springs which is cool and shaded). Then go up a tough hill another 2.5 miles and take a right to get to the...More

Finger Rock Canyon is a classic Catalina's "Front Range" hike. Park at the north end of Alvernon. The parking lot can fill up so get there early, actually good advice for hiking in the desert period! The trail is consistently steep with stunning views of...More

I've been hiking this trail for years and it never disappoints. Good views, and a good workout. Nice assortment of wildflowers in the early spring.

The first part of the trail is relatively flat and easy, but once you start climbing it is very rocky. It is not hard to follow, but it does have a lot of "step ups" and on the reverse trip "step downs." The ultimate goal...More

Like all trails in the Catalinas, it starts relatively flat. Once you start ascending, it rarely relents. Nice perspectives of the finger rock formation. Many stop midway for a nice mid-length hike. Good views from there, but the trail goes on to Kimball Peak. If...More

It's a long hike all the way to the end of the trail. Be prepared to be out there all day and take plenty of food and water. Good hiking and great view. Trail is a little narrow in places and cacti are close to...More
