On the upside this drive was unexpected: little traffic, great intro to the Redwoods and an easy hike next the Smith River to the Stout Grove. On the downside, the potholes were deep and plentiful. A pick-up would have been better.

Great way to see the Redwoods by car. Take your time driving the bumpy road from the outskirts of Crescent City to 199 via Stout Memorial Grove. Lots of trails along the route for hiking but be prepared to dodge the potholes along the way.

Not for the nervous driver - this road is rough, narrow, no shoulder/steep cliffs at times and sometimes super dangerous to pass oncoming traffic BUT IT IS AMAZING!!! Overcome the roads shortcomings because this is one ride you don't want to miss!!!!

It is stunning. We felt so small driving this road as we were gobsmacked seeing the Redwood forest. The trees are so magnificent. There were all kinds of cars and trucks on the road but it is not for RVs. the road is very narrow...More

This was a wonderful drive with many places to stop along the way and get out. One of the most impressive parts of the Redwoods and a great cut through to Medford.

It's unbaved road of a single line . The road is rough , with minimal speed limit. But it worth every second of it. You will be surrounded by the beautiful and amazing, giant red wood trees and along the smith river. What a spectacular...More

We stayed at Scopa by the Sea- in Crescent City. Purpose-built, cute, nautical-themed B&B with an awesome host and incredible breakfast!

There are many paying camp grounds in the area, including several near the harbor. Before we moved to the area we always preferred to use the campground in Jed Smith Park. Depending on when you will come you may need to... More
