One of the best things about living in Albuquerque are the parks and trails throughout the city. The foot hills are the "hills" that border the eastern side of the city and turn in the Sandia Mountains. They are both city and National Park areas and full of hiking and walking trails of varying difficulty. Few are paved and most... More

When it comes down to hiking in the Sandia Foothills I think most of the attention is given to La Luz Trail and Elena Gallegos, and sometimes I hear about the Pino Trail and Domingo Baca Trail. But somehow I don't hear much about the Embudo Canyon Trailhead which I decided to visit this past Saturday 1/4, and does not... More

This is a great place to get your walk on. Beautiful and fantastic for photo ops. I would recommend it on a day that's not too hot or wear a big hat!

These trails provide a great view of Albuquerque below and a terrific veiw of the local vegatation. The trails are well marked but can be somewhat difficult. A hike to the "old waterfall" is very nice bu take care for loose rock which could present a slipping hazzard. Worth the effort just take care.

This is Sandia Wilderness Trail 193 which starts at the parking spaces at the end of Indian School Road after it crosses Tramway Blvd. It is a nice trail with multiple side trails so your return route doesn't have to be the exact route you took going out. As with most trails in the Albuquerque area, use sunscreen and take... More

There is an extensive network of trails in the foothills, so you have your choice of destinations. The bicyclist do a good job of sharing the trail.

The preservation of the Albuquerque foothills was probably the best decision the city ever made. The views are beautiful in every direction and one can spend little or much time walking, hiking, running, biking, picnicking or just admiring the scenery. There are five main parking areas/access points leading to a variety of trails. Elena Gallegos is the most popular and... More

There are many places to park near the foothills and walk the trails. Some of the trails stay down low, some head up to the top of the mountain, some continue over to the other side. In the spring you can find small streams on the ABQ city side on some of the higher elevation trails. All offer something different.

Nice hiking, and the community is always improving it. Please, take water, and a walking stick will come in handy. There are lovely restaurants all around the area. And if you try one, go for one you think you might not like from the outside, because it's what's inside that counts [remember, this is an old historic area, many places... More
