Visiting the battlefields is nothing like I thought it would be. It truly is a thought-provoking, humbling experience. The park itself despite it's battlefield past is beautiful and the park service has done a great job telling the story of the Civil War.

Trench warfare that would define WWI was used here, and the concept of an underground tunnel filled with explosives was used here too. See history where it happened, but to get the best perspective see the movie, take the Ranger tour, and talk with the...More

Grant's strategy to take Richmond by cutting off the supply lines to the confederates worked. The 15 minute movie explained what happened. Then you can walk the field to see where it all played out. There are several sites beside the main battlefield. Grant's headquarters...More

I visited the Crater site several years ago with my son and his friend and didn't see much else of the park. I didn't realize what an important part this battlefield played in the war. Enjoyed our visit. It's a beautiful site.

My husband and I have visited Civil War battlefields all through the south and east, from Vicksburg to Gettysburg. We have learned more history than I ever did in school, and while we come with a “Union” perspective, we appreciate the courage of young soldiers...More

You should give yourself at least 4 to 5 hours to be able to get a good view through the park. I would try to be out of the park by 5 pm.
