Not really worth the hike in. Couldn't get that close to the face for safety reasons etc. Fox Glacier was definitely better on this day.

If you are near Franz Josef then you have to visit the glacier, it is after all what the area is particularly known for. The walk is about 90 minutes return from the car park over well groomed paths with no steep inclines. The glacier itself is still some distance away from you when you get to the viewing platform,... Loved this part of our trip. Great walk with lots of waterfalls along the way. Spectacular scenery. You can get close enough for a good view.

It has melted and it's melting. We could see the best view from below and we decided not to hike as it looked very small Best to go in winter

The signs along the road showing where the glacier extended to in 1955, 1970 and 1990 are pretty sobering. This glacier is amazing... go see it while you can!

There are three walks - the longest is estimated at 90 minutes - and that's how long it took us. Apart from some itsy bitsy bits, you could drive a family saloon along the trail - it is that wide and that well maintained and we saw 2-90 year olds doing it in mountain boots through to flip flops. The... More

This glacier is one of only three of it's type in the world. The others being Fox Glacier ( which we could not visit by helicopter due to low cloud) and another in Argentina, South America. This glacier can be seen from miles around, but is best experienced by taking a walk, hike or helicopter ride

Upon arrival at the car park a sign states it is a 90 minute return walk. I took about 3 hours as there was just so many different things to look at & see along the trek through the rainforest & then along the valley to the glacier viewing area. The walk along the way is amazing, there are so... More

We walked up from the car park. Well managed path through bush then onto the valley floor. Lovely waterfalls en route. The final view was impressive with the helicopters giving a sense of the enormous size. Well worth the walk

Don your raingear and heavy boots and be sure and hike to the glacier. It was raining when I started but the sun came out on the glacier as we reached it. Must see as it is currently receding!
