“If you think of gardening as an art form, Ayrlies is the best expression of that art”. Ayrlies is one of the select few New Zealand Gardens of International Significance. Bev McConnell presents a garden that is nearing maturity and is recognised for both design and horticultural excellence. The millennium year spurred a new project creating a wetland in the surrounding 10 acres which is now home to many native and visiting wildlife.

Food for the mind. Truly artistic and yet so natural. We lost ourselves for a few hours in this lovely garden and had our questions answered by Jackie and our book signed by Bev McConnell herself. My highlight was the guided tour by Bosco the jack Russell terrier. Beautiful

We visited the garden in November with friends who were staying with us from Wellington who had planned to attend the (postponed) NZ Flower & Garden show. While it was a bit of a drive from our house in West Auckland. We were delighted that we visited and thoroughly enjoyed what is a truly extensive, tranquil, and superbly maintained garden.... More

A beautiful very big garden. Magic corners everywhere you look. So much effort and talent invested in this amazing place. What a big generosity of this family to open the gates to everyone. Thank you so much, we had a wonderful time, my husband and me, at your beautiful garden.

This wonderful garden is a peaceful haven close to Auckland. Thirty years ago the owners bought a field and have lovingly transformed it with beautiful water features and exquisite planting. The swimming pool area and surrounding gardens are so inviting! When we were there a white wisteria draped the pergola like a net of fairy lights. Magical. If you want... More

A sense it all started with love and care. Bird Life complemented well. The scenery beyond the fence equally breath taking.

Perfection of design and cultivation makes for a tranquil and positively therapeutic visit. Certainly the best garden in New Zealand and up there with the world's very best. [Stayed at Brookwood Lodge; see review]

We had a bit of confusion thinking it was an open day and instead turned up to see a "by appointment" sign. Fortunately the owner was lovely when we approached her on the grounds, and it turns out we weren't the only ones who lobbed up unannounced. We very much enjoyed following the map's suggested walking route, seeing all sorts... More

Floriade tours claimed this was the top garden in NZ, which prompted us to go when in Auckland. We spent a glorious autumn afternoon there. The orange, red and gold leaves on the trees, falling and leaving a golden carpet on the deep green grass - very memorable. There were different sections to the garden, with expanses of green grass,... More

This excellent Garden is 'family' owned and must be visited with PRIOR reservation. There is NO main office; just pay ~$20 directly to one of the gardeners that are near the parking area. The Garden is very large - a good bit of EASY walking provides a wide variety of things to see..... including objects, plants, trees, and other vegetation,... More
