Beautiful beach area with packed sand that you can go for a nice drive along the beach. Make sure you have the right car to go in ...you wouldn't want to have to call a tow truck to pull you out.

I'm not sure our car could have handled the drive, so we opted to park by the entrance and just go for a short walk. We just walked a short ways up from the south entrance, but it was very scenic and a lot of...More

We hired a quad, it was just so beautiful here. I knew there was a look out so we took the quad to the lookout and it was a bit of fun, lots of mud and puddles and a spectacular view of the beach.

We were determined to visit the 90 Mile beach (which isn't really 90 miles...) and we did in March. It is certainly pretty, but unless you really want to drive on a beach it is not the prettiest one on the Northland. Most rental companies...More

We drove out to it from Pukenui, and we had the place to ourselves as the sunset. Very atmospheric and pretty. We made a last minute decision to go out there and we were so glad we did!

It was good to experience the drive on Ninety Mile beach on a bus tour - although there would be a certain thrill to taking your own car, the local knowledge of the driver provided a certain reassurance - the beach looks great on a...More

We were driving out to the northern end of the north island. The sign said 90 mile beach so we took the side trip to see what it could be. We stopped at the edge of the sand dunes and walked over to the beach....More

Are dogs allowed on Ninety Mile Beach?

This ninety miles beach literally is a "highway" where cars can run (allowed) up to 100km/h. Probably it is unwise to let the dog free running and playing without leash.
Can you drive the 90 mile beach yourself? If so what do you need to do it? Thank you. Tom

If you are in a hire car, they are not insured for driving on the beach. If you are in your own personal car, then yes you can because it is a public highway. However to access the beach in the north you need to drive up... More
From Paihia to Cape Reinga, with a short visit to Ninety Mile Beach, and return. Is it feasible as a day-trip, with a rental car (2WD)? We plan to go mid of Feb 2016. Thanks!
