We saw 8 Coq of the Roc performing behind a copse of trees. Best to show up to the Lek viewing platform - a 200 meter walk from the road around 8AM when the males are most active, weather conditions permitting. After the "show" we...More

I came up from Quito to take advantage of the wonderful hospitality of the Paz family offered with its overnight stay package. It was raining quite hard when I arrived and so I stayed under the covered patio and watched the various humming bird species...More

Many years ago, Angel Paz, figured out how to coax antpittas in to a feeding station to take worms. Until then, these shy denizens of the mountain forest were just about impossible to see. Angel is built a modest business of showing people his beloved...More

We went here with our guide on the morning Cock-of-the-Rock and Antpitta tour. The CotR lek was amazing. We had 10-20 males performing. They started in low light, bad for pictures and at a distance. As time passed, light improved and the moved closer. Then,...More

Under travelled and clean, a place to watch the birds in the cloud forest. There is a camping site within the grounds for 5 dollars per night.

We visited Paz de las Aves Bird Refuge on a wet, rainy April day. Rodrigo welcomed us warmly and took us first to the lek of the Andean Cock of the Rock which was our target bird for the visit. After that, it poured and...More

This is a great spot to view some amazing birds. The Andean Cock-of-the-Rock and several hard to see Antpittas come to their viewing areas. At the lodge, hummingbird and banana feeders bring in many species with close up views. I just did a morning stop...More

We had an amazing time with Angel Paz as he guided us around this property where we saw many birds including the Andean Cock-of-the-rock and the famous Giant Antpitta "Maria". The breakfast that his family prepared for us was delicious. Even the birds that were...More

I went with my guide, Sandra Patiño, from Bird Paradise. She flat-out knew heard birds. She could recognize their songs, follow where they were heading through the forest and brush and used recordings to draw them out. She could recognize every bird we saw. She...More

Just as Doug mentioned these birds are present and active early in the morning only. If you go at some other time you may see other interesting birds but probably not the cock-of-the-rocks. I suggest using the service of a... More

I didn't rent a car in Ecuador, and would not have wanted to drive there. I hired a bird guide and driver, which worked well. The Cock of the Rock lek would have been a nightmare to find on my own at dawn, but the driver... More

Since we will be staying in Quito and it is not likely we will get to Mindo super early, will we be able to see many birds in the middle of the day. What activities do you advise given that we will need to return to Quito in the late afternoon.
