Great historical site with great views

Worthwhile to visit. Great history and views. Good place to run off a bit of steam for children but only with adult supervision.

The Castle Hill National Historic Site was our first stop after getting off the North Sydney to Argentia ferry. The staff here were extremely helpful and got us setup with a 2-year Parks Canada pass - suggested based on the number of places that we had on our inineary for the next few weeks. Learned a lot about the historic... More

We spent a pleasant afternoon at this site. While enjoying our picnic in the parking area just outside the gates. one of the staff came out of the registration area to ask if we wanted a cup of tea! Once inside the fort we were equally impressed by the interpretive areas. There is an inner area explaining history and an... More

Sadly, the place had closed in early September, but we walked up the road and enjoyed the amazing views of the bay's. We picked blueberries on the way up and ate them as we walked... So tasty. It made it worth it.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Castle Hill Historic Site and even returned three times. History lovers will appreciate the story of France vs England and the original use of this fort in the clouds. There is also an interesting timeline display of the fishing industry along with many relics of the saltcod life. Hikers will like the nicely marked trails and... More

We enjoyed a wonderful couple of hours at this site. We had the pleasure of listening to a great tour guide who truly has a passion for history! Beautiful views of village of Placentia from top of site. Spectacular!

Pros: The visitor centre is full of artifacts from the forts that were once on the site. The signs are very accessible and easy to read. The exhibit is split into two part - fishing and army. A very informative video explains the strategies behind the reason the fort was built in the shape it was. The ruins of the... More

We came to see Castle Hill National Site on Sept 11 and the gate was closed. Apparently it closes for the season on Sept 5 th. Anyways, we walked up the hill and then onto two short trails. One was a spectacular view looking north and another trail up to the old Fort. Sorry we missed going into the visitor... More

This was our first stop when we got off the ferry from Nova Scotia. If you enjoy history, I would recommend swinging by. The staff was extremely friendly and put up with many shenanigans from some of the people in our group. I recommend trying on the soldiers uniforms that they have on hand. Snag some wild blueberries in August!

Easy walk to get around. Spectacular views of Placentia. Didn't get into the info centre as it wasn't open yet, but the ruins of the old fort were worth the stop. Spend about 30 minutes thwere.
