Step House is one of our favorite dwellings in the park. Our first few trips to Mesa Verde, we never made it to Weathermill Mesa. Big mistake. Step House is a self guided tour that gives you the opportunity to climb around one of the...More

This site on the Wetherill Mesa is a one mile loop. No ticket or guide required which is nice. It took us 40-45 minutes to do the loop and enjoy the pit houses and cliff dwellings. It could be done faster if you don’t visit...More

This is the only cliff house in the park you can visit without a tour ticket, so you can wander around it on your own and at your leisure. But what makes it really unique is that it is also the only cliff house where...More

While waiting for the Long House tour we hiked down to the Step House. No ticket or guide is required, although there was a ranger on duty at the Step House, which I assume is the norm. This is an easy and very worthwhile hike,...More

This is the only house that you can enter without being on a ranger led tour and the only one that people can do who are not in really good physical condition. It was a reasonable 1 mile loop hike to access this house and...More

Most of the cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde require a ticket, generally costing $5 per person. This one doesn't. It doesn't have ranger guided tours per se, instead it has rangers posted down in the dwelling to answer questions and make sure the visitors don't...More

The history is fascinating and how they abandoned the houses when resources were gone. The today nations state that their ancestors are still there in spirit

We were surprised at the access to the ruin we had at this site. The walk is relatively easy (a mile RT). If you come to the park you owe it to yourself to visit. We were able to linger here more than we could...More

We didn't take the tour because there were no more tickets available but we self toured using the very well done guide and there was a ranger at the site to answer our questions. Semi-challenging 1 mile trek to the site but worth it.

We almost skipped this 1 mile round trip trail to Step House but decided that while we were visiting Wetherill Mesa we would do this. I am so glad we did, the trail is pretty easy, a little stone stepping to get to it and...More

This was a great short walk to a cliff dwelling. There was a Park Ranger there to answer questions but it was nice to get to it on our own.

I’m 71 and I can no longer visit Cliff Palace, Long House, or Balcony House. However, Step House is doable if rest breaks are taken. Taking water is a MUST for anyone.
