Mount Auburn Cemetery was founded in 1831 as America's first landscaped cemetery. A National Historic Landmark, its renowned landscape inspired the creation of the nation's public parks. Mount Auburn was designated an Important Bird Area by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, reinforcing its status as a significant wildlife sanctuary. Still an active burial place, Mount Auburn Cemetery provides comfort and solace to countless families.

The Friends of Mount Auburn Cemetery was established in 1986 to assist in the conservation of the Cemetery's natural beauty and to promote the appreciation of its cultural, historic, and natural resources. Over 100 public programs are offered annually by the Friends to educate, enrich, and inspire the community. The Friends seeks financial support for education and interpretive programs and materials for the public, specific cultural projects, and operational support for horticultural rejuvenation and the preservation of the historic monuments, structures, and archival artifacts and records.

Everything here is art, natural and man made. The tower, the graves, the landscaping, the birds, great way to spend a couple of hours walking or sitting quietly. It's not a running or biking or picnic spot, most people keep it pretty respectful. The tower is a great view, if you can manage about 110 stairs.

And that's okay, since there are not many places on earth as beautiful as this to rest in peace. It's a cemetery, an arboretum, wildlife refuge, and bird watchers paradise. I've taken hundreds of walks here over the past two decades and I still see new beauty each time. There are also many words of wisdom, love and gratitude on... More

Mt Auburn cemetery is one of the best strolls in Cambridge. Definitely make sure to go up to the top of the tower to see the whole of Cambridge. Also one of the best things is that the winding paths are all on google maps. The staff frowns on picnics, though you can be stealthy.

This place is lovely. The landscaping, the birds, even the tombs make for an interesting walk. Good for more than one visit.

This is a Frederick Law Olmstead, the same guy who designed Central Park in Manhattan. It's breathtaking even with the headstones and crypts, which are in fact beautiful in and of themselves. People don't realize that there is an amazing chapel, the Bigelow, on the grounds of Mount Auburn. Go there. And just wander around the grounds. If you are... More

When friends come visit to Boston my wife and I always take them here. The garden is beautiful, the views of Boston are second to none, and the tombstones reveal remarkably interesting people. When the weather is fine, it's hard to find a better morning spent. Before or after, I highly recommend walking down the road to Sofra, a Turkish... More

We stopped for a visit on an icy December morning. We are definitely going back in the spring when everything is in bloom. This is an historic cemetery with marvelous monuments, trees and animals. The people in the Visitors Center were very informative and friendly.

We’ve lived in the Boston area for almost thirty years, but we had never toured the Mt. Auburn Cemetery until this fall. What a mistake! It’s a park with history, architecture, beauty, and charm. Don’t miss it!

Feeling awkward to bring your friends or family to a cemetery? It's yours and their loss then!!! Trust me! I've led my walking group to Mt.Auburn Cemetery many many times and each time, there is no lack of discoveries to appreciate while we were there - the antique tombstones showing tragic family stories or inspiring words, the meticulous landscape all... Perfect place to explore- zen and interesting. It is a perfect place to experience the fall foliage and take photos. Many of Boston's famous and upper crust are buried here. Would love to go back and take a guided tour. A must do when you are in Cambridge!
