IL State Museum is like many others. Collection of art, children's play area, fossils, local heritage and history and a sprinkle of interactive exhibits to boot. You will go here for a museum experience, you will be good with the visit, and you will be glad it was only $5 per adult. The basement children's area has a fun "fossil"... More

This museum often gets overlooked because of the Presidential Museum. It is a great place for young kids and has lots to offer in activities. It has struggled over the last year or so because of the state's budget cuts but it is really trying to come back. It's worth a stop if traveling with children.

When our 6 year old granddaughter visits, we always hit the Illinois State Museum. We all enjoy the main floor historical, geological and archaeological exhibits. Also, we always go to the basement discovery and interactive play area, which is also fun for all. This visit, however, we learned about the second floor exhibits, which were entirely new to us. Excellent... More

The Illinois State Museum has so much to see - plan on spending at least a few hours here. My favorite permanent exhibits are the four full-size dioramas detailing lives of pre-historic Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian Native cultures and historic Indians. Reasonable fees and free to seniors and ISM donors. Parts of the museum are "old-school"/classic museum and others are... More

This museum is very interesting. It has a new children's play area that is fun even for adults! This would be a good place to spend the day on a cold weekend!

This state museum recently re-opened after budget cuts closed it. There were two ticket-takers, and two guards, and just two visitors! The fee was $5; free to seniors. This museum specializes in Illinois geology and ancient history. It has many dioramas showing prehistoric life in the state. The second floor includes an art gallery. This was a perfect place to... Lynne Wilkinson The library across the street was not open for research on Sunday. The museum open on Sunday , may require a reservation. There are 2 short presentations and a log cabin to walk through. A small display of vintage dresses occupies the White House room. The rest of the building is taken up with pictures, uniforms, and artifacts.... More

This museum has an exhibit of natural history of Illinois on the ground floor, and on the second floor there were exhibits of Native American history, Carl Sandburg's home, and artwork by Illinois residents. The natural history exhibit looks like it's stuck in the 1970s or 1980s with it's interpretative signs and dioramas. It needs more hands-on activities for modern... More

This museum is awesome. The research and collections lab (off site) is in line behind the Smithsonian so the collections are well researched. It's too bad Illinois didn't respect a good thing and keep the fabulous staff and researchers. I hope it stays as solid now as ever. Since its re-opened (due to the state budget) kids are just as...
