SAM has been the center for world-class visual arts in the Pacific...

SAM has been the center for world-class visual arts in the Pacific Northwest since 1933. Visit SAM to see a museum carved into the city, as much a part of Seattle's landscape and personality as the coffee, rain, mountains, Pike Place Market, and the Space Needle.

Our three distinct locations celebrate the region's position as a crossroads where east meets west, urban meets natural, local meets global. Our collections, installations, special exhibitions, and programs feature art from around the world and build bridges between cultures and centuries.

Finally had a chance to go to the Seattle Art museum and left feeling underwhelmed. We recently had visited the MOA museum in Vancouver, BC and were extremely impressed so to follow up with this one was a disappointment. I know they are very different style museums, but there were only a few impressive pieces of art to our eyes... More

Went for the YSL exhibit and also looked around the rest since we had to wait for our entrance time and I enjoyed it. Walking shoes recommended if you're keen on seeing all the pieces. It is quite a space. Unique collections and well-curated YSL exhibit. I also enjoyed the various cultural arts that were not part of the special... More

This museum is small and quaint and holds some decent pieces but it isn't the type of grandiose exhibition and can be done in half a day

Some gems and great pieces but i found the space and layout confusing and spent less than 30 minutes there. Nothing to get excited about, sadly.

Sadly, our main museum, SAM was designed rather hastily and it shows. If you go to the original site of SAM, which is now SAAM (Seattle Asian Art Museum) you find a gorgeous Art Deco building overlooking all that is good in Seattle in the center of a beautiful park designed by the famous Olmstead Brothers - Volunteer Park. The... More

The SAM is a wonderful place to spend a day. Their collection is varied and spans many decades and styles. The museum is large and not too crowded so it is easy to go at your own pace.

We went to SAM to see the traveling Yves Saint Laurent exhibit - which was pretty spectacular. But the rest of the museum was disappointing. Very jarring arrangements (walk out of an area with Renaissance paintings and see something very modern - like a giant rat standing on someone in bed...). Poor examples of artwork (like something painted in the... More

Best time to visit would be first Thursday of the month when there is no cost for the regular access areas. Art is interpretive and its interesting to see what is considered worthy of going into a museum. There are extra exhibits you can pay to visit but we didn't visit so I cant rate those. Overall, it's a decent... More

Have been to SAM several times, and remain surprised that this the best Seattle can do? It's large, yes . . . but needs better organization for popular exhibitions such as the YSL event. Long lines, crowds not managed well, and no guidance to keep people moving along. No longer a bar downstairs for those late afternoon times when having... More
