About
These magnificent structures, which are currently being restored, were built in the 13th century. Growing as the city grew, they protected and surrounded, in the Middle Ages, the entire city of Provins. Today we can admire a beautiful part, and the complexity of the towers, which each have a different shape. Two fortified gates are still visible: the Saint-Jean gate, with its two almond-shaped towers, which defended the old Paris Road; and the Jouy gate, once surmounted by a bell, a small keep with a bell, which made it possible to watch out for the enemy and warn in case of danger.

Carcassonne of the North
Jul 2020 • Solo
We live near Carcassonne and are currently on a Roadtrip around France. Today's stop was a real feeling of déjà vu as the similarities between these city walls and Carcassonne Medieval City.
This Porte is reconstructed and you can walk sections of the wall.
This attraction is free.

So impressive

These splendid fortified walls built in13th century are really very impressive. The gate’s purpose with its two almond-shaped towers, was to ensure protection of the old road to Paris. Walk alongside these walls and feel the medieval atmosphere of the town. You can also get on top of the wall and enjoy the great view of the town and the fields surrounding the town.

The mediaeval city of Provins is nice and the walk along the city walls is nice, though tiring in the full sun and +40C(!).. make sure you are prepared. But it is nice to walk down the walls or along the top

Step back in time

A great view from the ramparts which once circled medieval Provins. It must have been magnificent 800 years ago, imposing and powerful. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and let your imagination run wild. From the ramparts you can wander into the old quarter. Lots to see, eat and do grab a table in the square to enjoy some wine. Have fun!

View of the Ramparts
Aug 2017 • Couples
Saint-Jean's Gate and the ramparts provided us excellent views into the medieval past of Provin. We let our imagination wander while we walked up the lanes from the train station to the Gate, walked outside along a portion of the perimeter, and then atop the ramparts. A hike from the train station to the ramparts is a reasonable trip that took us back in time in a most enjoyable way. One hint; take water and avoid waiting too long to stop for a meal. Some eateries were closed or closing around 1600 hours local time to re-stage for dinner on the August day we visited.

Walk through the gate and the Ramparts
Jul 2017 • Family
Provins is a walled medieval city, so it has a gate which is a nice structure and it is still in great condition, the walls (the ramparts) are all around the city and you can go up the stairs and take a look at the whole city, there are several spots to go up and down. Grab a map at the tourist info office.

Very cool!

You can access the top of the gate/ramparts via multiple staircases on the interior of the wall. Very beautiful view of the country side. For me it was essential part of my visit to walk on the ramparts of the medieval city.

Fun for the kids, even on a rainy day
Mar 2017 • Family
The older (9 and 12) kids loved walking along the ramparts, but there were a lot of stairs to go up and down so our five-year-old got a bit tired. Beautiful views of the countryside and the kids all said this was one of their favorite things during our week-long trip to France. Took about 90 minutes to drive to from central Paris. Provins is a great excursion for families!
