About
The rippling Tarhapuro Waterfall in the middle of a lush herb-rich forest is a refreshing sight. The waterfall is at its most handsome in spring when the snow is melting. On a winter hike you can explore the waterfall's smooth, icy surface. The Tarhapuron polku Trail starts out from Rantatie Road.

Nice to take a lovely walk through the forest to the waterfall. Always a wonderful feeling and sound to hear the water falling. A very pleasant afternoon

We had just been to 'Devils Church' and stopped by here on our way back to the hotel. It was a quick and fairly easy 15 minute walk and only got challenging the last 1 minute or so where we needed to climb over boulders and tree roots to get up closer to the falls. It was small in size but neat how it ran under parts of the trail.

Tarhapuro Waterfall is situated in Koli National Park, the municipality of Lieksa. The parking place (address Rantatie 46) is named Mustanniityt on maps. The path from the parking place to the waterfall is 900 meters.

The total height of the waterfall is 15 meters but the highest drop is only 2 meters. However, the waterfall is very beautiful. After seeing this waterfall you have to walk the same route (900 meters) back to the parking place. You don't need any hiking map here.

There is also the very beautiful circle route available (Mustanniityt parking place - Tarhapuro - Mäkränaho - Pieni-Koli - Likolahti - Mustanniityt parking place). This is about 4.3 kilometers but notice that there are quite deep hills on the path. I recommend that you buy the Koli hiking map (available in the nature and visitor center Ukko) although there are signs on the route.

It is also possible to hike from the nature and visitor center Ukko and Break Sokos Hotel Koli (address Ylä-Kolintie 39) to Tarhapuro Waterfall. The shortest route is about 2.8 kilometers in one direction. Again I recommend the hiking map.

Notice also that there are a nice small swimming beach and a campfire site named Likolahti only 150 meters from the Mustanniityt parking place.

We don't have that many waterfalls in Finland so Tarhapuro waterfall is small but worth seeing. On wintertime you can see footprints of some animals, like lynx, since the animals come to the waterfall to drink. The trail to the waterfall from Rantatie road is in good condition and also suitable for children.
