About
The Shepard's trail starting and end point is at Paimenenvaara parking area on Kotaniementie road. The trail features herb-rich slope forests and their vegetation. Information boards along the trail are in Finnish, English and German. The trail leads across rugged cliffs and is more demanding than other trails. The lenght of the trail is 2,6 km and there isa campfire site and a well along the way.

Surprisingly informative and well organized

We did the trail by our own, just following the map and instructions, and saw a lot of local plant species, squirrels, birds and traced both elk and bear, saw unfortunately nothing of Wolverine. We saw the local acricultural landscape and also learned how acriculture was done in ancient times by slash burn and we greatly enjoyed the September day, had a picnic with us and stayed by an old settlement, warmed us by the bonfire and just sensed the nature. Maybe a little bit long hike, we could have done the shorter one, too.

Shepard's Trail

This circle trail is called Shepard's Trail (Paimenen polku in Finnish). It is 2.6 kilometers long and it starts from the Paimenenvaara parking place (Kotaniementie Road). The route isn't very long but notice that there are deep hills. So you have to be in good condition (physically healthy). It is also possible to take a longer route towards Mäkränaho etc.

Personally I think that this is the least important and the least interesting hiking route in Koli National Park. However, there are very beautiful cliffs and herb-rich slope forests here, too. Especially the view from Paskovaara Hill is amazing!
