Rich in historical, cultural, and environmental treasures, Kahalu'u Bay...

Rich in historical, cultural, and environmental treasures, Kahalu'u Bay welcomes more than 400,000 visitors annually, making it West Hawai'i's most popular tourist destination. Kahalu'u Bay Education Center is a partnership between The Kohala Center and the County of Hawai'i to revive and revitalize Kahalu'u Bay and Beach Park.

The center is open every day from 9:30 a.M. To 4:30 p.M. And rents snorkel gear onsite. (We are closed on the day of the Ironman Triathlon and during hazardous surf/weather conditions.)

Through volunteer-driven educational programs such as ReefTeach and Citizen Science, Kahalu'u Bay Education Center promotes and measures the positive impacts of environmental stewardship to ensure the bay remains a healthy and welcoming place for residents and visitors alike.

Come spend a beautiful day at Kahalu'u Bay and see our beautiful honu (green sea turtles), corals and fish! We look forward to welcoming you!

My suggestion would be to arrive early and snorkel for a bit before the tours get here. Easy snorkeling, but lifeguards on hand too.

We rented a snorkel set from the folks at Reef Teach. They were excellent. They didn't just hand the kids a set, they fitted them, explained how to use them, and explained things about the reef and fish, what to do and not do. Fish and turtles galore. It was the kids (10 and 11 years old) fav snorkel place.

My sister works at the Bay and educates people on the fish and turtles that reside there. My granddaughter got to snorkel and take pictures while there. We saw wonderful sights and enjoyed learning about the marine life. Take the time to go and enjoy this beautiful Bay.

Not only is this my favorite beach, but I enjoy the personnel that they have here to educate visitors, and da kine alike. Ecotourism is a driving force on this island, Correct ways to interact with the Honu, is one of them. This is not only a great snorkel beach, where I will soon have a family reunion of those... This is a great place for beginner snorkelers, lots of fish in shallow water. If you decide to go on a weekend I would warn you to be very careful walking in tide pools and on the lava rocks along the sea wall as you could step on a fish hook . On several occasions I have seen local kids... More

the folks at the education center are amazing. super great tips and advice for first time snorkelers and they really know about the bay itself. keep your rental receipt for a discount the next time you rent and they'll have record of your fin & goggle size.

We enjoyed the informative explanation of the protocols of snorkeling. The gentlemen were very friendly. Snorkeling gear, storage locker for valuables and food truck were available. There are also very friendly people on hand to explain the various sights and underwater creatures. It was perhaps our favorite local beach for ease of access and a fairly protected swimming site.

Love this beach. Great place to snorkel, young or old. Their are many types of fish there to observe, it's like swimming in a giant aquarium. Watch the turtles swim, eat the algae off the rocks and climb onto the beach to sun bath. Picnic tables are available under the pavilion. Great place to relax and enjoy the undersea life... More

This is a great spot to snorkel and see some amazing fish. There are lifeguards on duty on this beach which makes it feel safer for families.
