Description:

Mauna Kea Summit Adventures offers daily trips to the summit of Mauna Kea...

Mauna Kea Summit Adventures offers daily trips to the summit of Mauna Kea for sunset and stargazing. We are the pioneer service of this kind and we have over 30 years of experience. Our daily trip starts off on the Kona coast 4 hours before sunset and returns 5 hours after sunset. We travel in custom built 4x4 mini coaches with panoramic windows. Our guides are experts in island geography, geology, culture and astronomy. At the 9,000FT.level, we stop for the better part of an hour to dine and experience the visitor's center. We arrive on the summit before sunset and we stay until the best of the color has faded. Afterward, if natural conditions allow, we put on a highly informative stargazing session with large, computerized amateur telescopes.

MKSA does not guarantee the weather in any way. Although the mountain enjoys a great majority of fine weather there is the possibility the tour may be canceled, and refunded or may encounter poor conditions in the field.

Very comfortable ride in a minivan and our guide Maka was really interesting. The lasagne was good. Great experience to get to the top and see all the observatories upp there. In spite of the warm jackets we could borrow it was very cold on the top and it was enough to stay and watch the beautiful sunset. To look... More

Incredible experience! Our tour guide, Joe was super friendly, extremely knowledgeable and made our tour that much more pleasant. We joined in late since we were staying on the Hilo side so we were the last 2 to join, but that didn't matter to Joe. He made us feel welcome. Dinner was earlier than we had anticipated, but the chicken... More

This was an amazing tour with Grant. He picked us up right at our resort - Worldmark in Kona on the Big Island. From there we enjoyed an 11 hour adventure with only 12 on our van - very personal. Grant made the trip so much fun. He welcomed questions from all of us, shared the history of Captain Cook,... More

Our guide Arthur was great. He not only new a lot about the mountains, but also about geology and the history of the Big Island. He was very patient in answering my 1000 questions and had a great sense of humor. He made the tour very personal and was always looking to make his guests happy and entertained. The volcanos... We did the summit and stars tour on our trip to the Big Island. Here are a few tips: 1. Dress as warm as you can for the summit and it is extremely cold and windy. Winds were close to 40 mph with a temp of around 24 making it quite cold. 2. The ride up to the summit is... More

This is a very well run tour company and even though they charged less than some others we priced out, these guys gave you more. The tour vans are new model Mercedes tour vans, the nicest on the mountain. The vegetarian lasagna is hearty and tasty and the brownie for desert is a decent portion and very fresh! The tour... Highly informative trip to the summit of Mauna Kea. Driver was wonderfully informative abou the astronomy, geology and geography of the area. Departed our meeting point at 3:30 pm. Driver was highly informative the entire trip up the summit. Stopped for dinner (vegetable lasagna and a brownie - which were both delicious) and to acclimate to the high altitude before... More

This is a truly unique experience. It's pretty unreal that you can go from a warm beach up to the absolutely freezing, snowy summit of Mauna Kea in the same day. BUS: The tour pick-up point was easy to find and the bus was right on time. The bus was new with very comfortable, large leather seats, aircon/heater and pretty... More

I can imagine this is a once-in-a-lifetime type of tour *if* the weather cooperates. Unfortunately for us, the sun set behind clouds (there was a brief clearing after the sunset) and we were not able to star gaze in the park. However, this is obviously no fault of the operator and they did their best to make it a great... More
