We were doing a bike tour around the big island and hopped onto the Old Mamalahoa Hwy whenever we could. Beautiful serene roads, very little traffic, on the Hilo side there are many bridges with raging rivers and waterfalls, lush vegetation. Near Honoka'a climbing up on the Old Mamalahoa Hwy it was pure magic, going from jungle/rain forest to massive... More

We were very impressed with the quality and smoothness of the main highways on the Big Island. The speed limit is low at times but the locals do not heed it. They drive very fast on all roads so be aware. That should not stop you from enjoying the view. We pulled over frequently in regular stopping areas to allow... More

Good road, except when stuck behind. Slow car. No place to pass easily if there is a lot of traffic coming against you.

Mamalahoa - just saying it is fun. It can get crowded and there was construction when we were there. Either grin and take the aloha spirit or turn around - or better yet stop in one of the many stores or eateries along the way. Fun in every sense of the word.

The Mamalahoa leads everywhere, not a fast highway but leads to great beaches and into the real local areas of Hawaii.

The "upper road" is the road less traveled and offers long range views. It is fun to drive and will provide plenty of photo opportunities.

Mamalahoa will take you around the south end of the island, to Volcanoes National Park. It's twisty and slow in parts, has some lovely scenery, and takes you by a plethora of local attractions, like coffee plantations, unique Kona stores, gardens, and farms.

We have taken this road several times and it has been a delight. It cuts hours off any other route from Kona to Hilo and back. Several things are important. If you decide to stop at the pass, it is very chilly at times so dress accordingly. There are also times when the highway is shut down due to snow... More

This road may get you to Kona Or Waimea a little quicker but it may not get you there at all. Very dangerous road at night. Speeders and inebriated drivers have caused many accidents. May take a little longer, to take 19, better safe than...
