This is not to be missed. The telescopes available at dark at the visitor's center offer once-in-a-lifetime visibility of the sky. Just naked-eye stargazing is spectacular. Don't be deterred by inclement weather en route, the summit is clear 300 nights of the year--you're above the...More

Renting a 4x4 from Harper’s rentals, we thought that seeing the sunset at the summit amid the observatories would be the highlight of the afternoon trip. It was spectacular, didn’t disappoint. We descended to the visitor center just after sunset and with enough darkness to...More

There are 2 sights to see on Mauna Kea. First is the summit. You will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get there. Some rental companies will not allow you to go to the summit so check first. The summit is the best place...More

Rent a 4wd for this site alone! You go above the clouds and can see the best sunset of your life! It does get cold so make sure you bring a jacket. Once done with the sunset head down to the visitor center and watch...More

Mauna Kea is so special in the background of the Kohala Coast, that it's easily overlooked with all the other activities that the Big Island has to offer. The trip is worth it. Sunsets are always above the clouds at the visitors center, which is...More

Adventurous drive with the 4wd. From Hilo about 1 hour to the visitor center. There you have to acclimatize for 30 min. At the summit it is really cold. Bring warm stuff. The view is worth it!!!

My wife and I booked a trip to Mauna Kea through Hawaii Forest &Trail. It is one of the best decisions we made on our whole trip. Joe was our driver/host and kept our group entertained the whole way. We got picked up in our...More

Great way to spend the evening away from the city. Excellent evening sky show by staff + it's free. Visitor center needs expansion.

Went up here for sunset and star gazing. We both felt a bit altitude sick so remember to take it slow when you get there to adjust to the altitude. It started out cloudy but cleared up just in time for an incredible sunset. After...More

It was an unique trip driving up to Mauna Kea at night and see the stars and planets/moon from the telescopes. Definitely a "cool" experience. Make sure to layer up and bring hot tea/soup to stay warm!

If you know how to drive in the snow, you could try it. Don't hike. Take a tour, it is available.

In my experience Budget have been the more reliable. I've booked vehicle 'X' and been given 'X'. You will want either a Jeep Jeep, the ugly, thirsty 4x4's or go for something like a Ford Explorer - the big 4x4 SUV. You will... More
