It is a nice view from 10,000 feet to watch the sunset but not worth the drive or time it takes to get there

I had the honor and privilege of experiencing Kalaupapa last week, along with three others. We are all over 65 years of age, but frequent hikers, so we decided to take the challenge and do the hike down to the historical park from topside. We allowed 2 hours for the hike down and that was about how long it took.(Tours... More

Children under 16 years old are not allowed into the park. The last residences of Kalaupapa, who decided to remain at Kalaupapa even though they could leave, negotiated with the NPS to preserve the history of the peninsula. St. Damien and St. Mother Marianne Cope were recently declared saints by the Catholic Church for their service to the patients here.... More

This National Historic Park is a tribute to the brave people who lived and died here and to those who cared for them. Over 8000 souls are buried in cemeteries in the park, each with his or her own tragic story.Today several patients still live in this peaceful, sacred and beautiful place. Many of the original building have been preserved.... More

Not too far from the Phallic Rock is Kalaupapa National Historical Park. High above the Leper colony or Settlement you experience spectacular views of the Kalaupapa Peninsula. It's aa easy walk from the Parking Lot and you'll be richly rewarded for your time.

I had been looking forward to visiting for years and was not disappointed. A lot of history here. It is slow and quite. If you are interested in the history behind this park then you must visit and get some of the local stories. The hike down is beautiful, but rough, especially if it is muddy. Consider taking the donkeys.

This was the second time I've taken the Kalaupapa mule ride to the peninsula and had the Damian tour. The scenery going down and at the bottom is spectacular. The view of the Pali sea cliffs that rise 2000 is breathtaking. I think this is one of the most beautiful scenic views in Hawaii. The mule ride is a bit... More

As others have noted this takes some planning, but well worth it. We took a cab from Molokai Airport (Topside) ($30) to the Mule Barn to pick up our permits. Mule Barn does not open till 0745 so had to wait till then. Started our hike down at 0800 and it took us 1 hour and 45 minutes, finishing about... More

We took the mule ride down and it was quite beautiful. The hike is manageable, but two of the three people who did the hike seemed to wish they hadn't. They looked beat and that was before they even had to go back up! This place is a special little monument to the history of the Hansens Disease sufferers and... More

We arraigned our tour of Kalaupapa with Damien Tours LLC, Makani Kai Airline, and Hele Mai Taxi, and were very pleased with the experience. We decided to hike down the Pali trail into the village and fly out of the settlement. This was a same day trip leaving Maui early in the morning and returning to Maui mid afternoon. If... More
