This is a fabulous trip. We stayed in Pension Hubertus in Zell am See about 15km from the dams. The Pension subscribes to the Zell am See Summer Card for which it pays €10 a person a day - you can't get this card yourself as a visitor you have to stay in a Hotel that is participating in the scheme. The journey to the dams is superb. First we got bus 660 from Zell am See to Kaprun. This is free with the Summer card. You stay on the bus all the way through Kaprun right to the last stop. Here you wait to go on the a further journey by bus, then a lift and then a bus again. Again this part of the trip is included with the Summercard. It would cost ?€26 a person if you just turned up. The first bus goes up a private road to the bottom of a lift. (You cannot drive this part yourself). This is the oddest mountain lift I've ever seen. It is basically a horizontal platform on rails that is lifted up the steep hill (81 degrees at steepest) by a cable (like a funicular). Nearly 200 people stand on this open air platform as it ascends. You then get on another bus that goes through a long tunnel and then past the first reservoir. It climbs on a hairpin bend road up to the second reservoir. The views from this road are superb, only bettered by the stupendous views from the top at the second reservoir. In one direction you look down over the lower reservoir. The other direction you see the mountains and the Grossglockner glacier. The water is a beautiful turquoise as it comes off the glacier. I've only seen glacial water that is brighter in the Canadian Rockies. (and I've seen many glaciers) The top reservoir is dammed in an unusual way. The middle of the reservoir is held back by a natural rocky outcrop, which we walked up for more good views. On either side is a beautiful dam. ie Two dams in total, one either side of the rocky outcrop, There is a small and very informative museum on this rocky outcrop too. You can get guided tours, but all the English ones were full by the time we got there. We did the whole trip in reverse to get back to Zell am See. All covered by the Summercard. All in all, it was one of my favourite days of 2019.

Just getting to the top is quite an adventure in itself. Coaches going through mountain tunnels and then the ride up on the lift, what we would call a funicular. Once at the top you come face to face with fantastic scenery, the colour of the dam water is beautiful. Lots of walks if you are up to it, if not a variety of little restaurants for a light meal or drink to sit and take in the magnificant scenery. Lovely clean toilets. A walk along the dam wall was something to tick off our bucket list. Well worth the visit, loved every minute. Would certainly return if in the area. Definitely a "must see".

A very beautiful place , tranquil and picturesque. Approached in a way like no other, in a very impressive funicular ( which isn’t for the faint hearted ). All very smooth to get there. Go early

Amazing views and a fantastic hike! It is challenging to the top and took us longer than expected, but it was well worth it. Make sure to follow the path, it is easy to get lost. Closed in the winter. Enjoy!
