We took the Iron Mountain Road to see Mt. Rushmore. It was a great drive with pig tail turns and tunnels with fantastic views of Mt. Rushmore. Make sure you take the road going to Mt. Rushmore, not when leaving.

You've never seen Mount Rushmore until you've seen it from this drive. Best done in morning from south end.

We really enjoyed the slow driving and winding roads. Since we went in April we didn't have to fight with the thousands of people on the roads.

Enjoyable drive with amazing scenery. Takes awhile but so worth it. Be on the lookout for animals so do the speed limit. Pullouts are in just the right places to take photos.

A twisting mountain road with a view - a motorcyclists' delight at a modest speed and scenery worth the ride!

If you are a motorcycle rider, this is a MUST DO! Brilliant views, road surface if perfect is 99% of the road, plenty of scenic stops and of course the tunnels and pig tails. So much to see and do in this area, the Iron...More

The tunnels keep you on your toes and would hate to be here in peak season as must jam up like Manhattan.

Travel this from South to North so as your going through the mountain you see Mount Rushmore. A windy narrow Road that has beautiful scenery all the way through. A Must Drive... Do not miss it.

Can I drive the Iron Mountain Road in a 26 foot RV?

An RV of any kind would have problems with the very tight "Pigtail" bridges, and the tunnels as they are designed for one vehicle at a time. 26 ft. might get around where the others would fear to tread, because of the... More

Will be traveling from Dodge City, KS to Rapid City, but want to side-track and take Iron Mountain Road for the scenic drive and Mount Rushmore views. Trying to figure out where to pick up 16A on the way up and where to get off to head on up to Rapid City. Tried several "destinations" or "stops" on Google maps to try and make it work, but I'm a little confused about where the scenic part of Iron Mountain Road begins & ends coming from the south. As is, Google Maps has me doing the following: 1. Cross over from Nebraska to SD on 385. 2. Continue north on 79 3. Take Left on Cobb Rd. 4. Turn Right on N Cobb Rd. 5. Take Left on SD-36 6. Turn Right on US-16A (about 16.5 mi) 7. US-16A E turns Left and becomes SD-244W (This is where I am confused if I should continue on with the step since we are really heading to Rapid City. Are all of the Mount Rushmore Views prior to this step????? If so, then I believe we would take a right rather than a left at this point?????? Thank you for your help!

I would continue on 244 until reaching 16. Granted, you will have seen most of the iconic views as you drove north towards the monument, but there are still a couple of great views as you drive near the monument and as you... More

I see no problem driving your van on Iron Mountain Road or the Needles Highway. There's lots of curves, mainly on the Needles Highway, but I was never uncomfortable with the drive. It's really not bad at all!
