Generations of playgoers have been delighted by this gem of a theater located near Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse in Custer State Park. This professional theatre, affiliated with the University of South Dakota, but managed by the Black Hills Playhouse, Inc has played since 1946 and is one of the oldest, continuously running summer stock programs in the country. Four to five incredible productions play throughout the summer Tuesday through Sunday. Descriptions and ratings of shows available at website. Beautiful picnic grounds, pre-order picnics, and concessions available. Park pass required on car for entry.

The plays at the Playhouse are very good and the setting is marvelous. Be sure to bring a jacket for the cool evenings.

This playhouse is in Custer State Park in the middle of nowhere! The theatre was very rustic, yet comfortable. Everyone was very friendly, and the play was wonderful. It was a musical called NUNSENSE, and the 5 nuns (they were the whole show) were excellent!...More

We took in the musical "Pageant" this year. What a great show! The quality of every production we have attended at the Playhouse has been incredible. Sets, costumes, sound, lights, acting...all excellent. A fun place to visit in the middle of Custer State Park!

It is a good idea to have reservations so you get the best seat, but not always necessary. Thursday through Sunday tend to be busiest days, especially during musicals. Best way to get the schedule is to visit our... More
