This large sculpture had me puzzled so I read the sign explaining it. It didn't help much, as the symbolism intended just didn't work for me. The figure reaches skyward, which evokes the notion of north, yet the river runs south. The children huddled at its base don't look like they are being nurtured. I am not a metallurgist so I might not know what I am talking about, but the streaks of green against the brown bronze metal would appear to be ordinary copper oxidation, yet somehow they contribute to the sculpture in a positive way. They both suggest the flowing nature of the river, as well as the green shoreline against which the muddy brown river flows. Intentional or accidental, it helps.

Superb spot for river watching and photography. The Port of New Orleans building is also interesting, full of artwork and model ships. Once a month, there is a free riverboat tour on the Fireboat. My go to spot for relaxing.

Somehow the locals don't know about this exquisite statue! She is in front of the cruise ship terminal, Erato Street parking, just about a block from Mardi Gras World. She is beautiful and the children are serene. Mother River represents the Mississippi River and the children represent the tributaries. Definitely worth the work to find her and I got to educate a few locals along the way.

Along the Mississippi River Walk, near the Outlet Collection Mall, the Mother River Statue is a nice place to sit and watch the river traffic.

If you are anywhere near Mardi Gras World or The Port of New Orleans, the Mother River Statue is neat to see as you walk along the River. Located in a plaza with numerous swings to sit on and watch ship traffic on the River, it is a nice statue to see, but nothing that is a "must see".
