Went fishing there this past weekend and caught al sorts of great fish. Many boat ramps, very clear water (I saw my anchor in 8' of water).

Amazing lake - has great sites from the University, to natural sites, to beautiful lake homes. Amazing history - the most studied lake in world! Great fishing, great sailing.

Our visit to Madison was in March, so the weather was very cool. However, we did make a stop to the beach on Lake Mendota anyway. Was very nice; lots of activity even in the spring.

Excellent lake for boating. Swimming can vary depending on the amount of algae. The dirt at the bottom of the lake can get a little gooey in places also and has a horrendous smell to it. Not sure why. Fun to cruise around on and...More

Sit down and enjoy the view from the UW's Memorial Union Terrace or one of many parks and public spaces surrounding the lake. It makes the UW Madison Campus one of the most scenic public university campus sites to be found anywhere.

We happened to be there as the Supermoon was rising and the sun was setting. So beautiful there, a great place to walk, run, ride a bike.

There are pontoon rides and perhaps even rentals available through MSCR (Madison School and Community Recreation). "Drop in" rides are $6. It's about a 90 min ride. Beautiful way to see the lake. For more info, do a web... More
If I get there at around 6, where should I tell the cab driver to drop me off for a jog? I'd like to see the lake while jogging. Is it safe if I am alone? Also, is there a good place to grab a casual bite to eat afterwards? Will likely be sweaty. Also, can you paddleboard on the lake or kayak that late in the evening?

The best place to be dropped off would be the Memorial Union on the UW campus which is under major renovation but I believe they still rent boats and paddle boards there but you may have to be a student or faculty member. A... More
