The symbol of Uwajima city, a small castle tower stands peacefully
Nov 2020

This castle the symbol of Uwajima City and one of the existing castle towers. The castle tower is located on top of a small hill. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to climb up from the gate on foot, and the slope is generally gentle, although there are some steep slopes and stairs. Some of the stone steps become slippery when wet. And there are some muddy spots where you need to be careful.
The castle tower is a small, three-story structure, but its peaceful appearance in the main circle will attract your attention. In spring, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the combination of cherry blossoms and the castle tower will be especially beautiful.
The view of Uwajima city and the harbor from the third floor is very impressive.
It's within walking distance from Uwajima Station, making it easily accessible. On the other hand, there is no dedicated parking lot for Uwajima Castle, so if you are coming by car, you'll need to use a shared parking lot nearby. Tourist guides are always available, so it's a good idea to learn about the history of the castle from them.

Short Hike up hill, Lovely Little Castle
Dec 2020
I've been to seven of the original castles now, I just made a trip out to Uwajima to see this castle. There was a parking lot near the entrance but it's closed now, there is a parking garage a few blocks over, there is a sign that guides you here from the castle. To get to the castle, you have to walk up hill a bit maybe 10-15 minutes. Once at the top, you get great views of Uwajima. The castle is just a main keep in the middle of an open field, kind of interesting. There is a 200 Yen fee to enter, which is pretty cheap. I found the inside to be pretty interesting and worth the visit.

Lovely

Though it small, it is one of the original castles of Japan. The view from there could not be better.
It is worth the climbing.
I parked at the entrance and it was pretty affordable (200¥)

Must be physically able
Oct 2019 • Solo
Wandering around the castle grounds is free but be prepared to go uphill, it’s clear that physical geography was used as a defense tactic back then😜. To enter the castle, it’s only 200¥ which is great but to get there and move through through the castle you will be faced with some steep stairs. The steps they have on the grounds are uneven so make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes, closed toe if possible. Lots of benches on the way up if you need breaks but be prepared to get your steps in.

Satisfactory little castle
Sep 2019 • Solo
Visited Uwajima as a side trip from Matsuyama. The castle is an easy 10-minute walk from the station, plus a not too strenuous hike up a wooded hill. The stone retaining walls are overgrown, adding to the historical mystique of the place. The castle keep costs only ¥200 to enter and there are sweeping views of the surrounding hills and sea from the top floor. There is extremely little English inside. The castle is very small but it’s attractive and worth visiting if you have the time.

one of the 12 originals !!
Nov 2018 • Family
This is a small castle, compared to some of its brothers/sisters, but original, all wood. Little visited, so you have it all for yourself. After our visit we did walk in the neighbourhood and saw it from different points of view : the water in the background. And of course it is surrounded by a small but nice park

One of 12 original castles
May 2018 • Solo
A short walk from the train station. A nice, huff & puff hike up and easy concrete pathway about halfway. Then you’ll need to walk on dirt/gravel pathways and stone stairs to get to the top. Nice views of the surrounding areas.

Love this Place!

Spent a number of years in Ehime and have visited Uwajima Castle 3 times now. It's not the biggest of castles but it's a goodie. Definitely worth the visit, and why not take in Ozu Castle to the North as well.

Step back in time
Feb 2017 • Family
Uwajima Castle is a treat for anyone who loves history or architecture, since it is one of the 12 castles that was not destroyed and rebuilt. The huge, wood beams inside the small, three-story structure is fascinating, and it is easy to imagine what life might have been like, since the interior has not been radically converted into a museum. As a result, the castle is also a challenge for people with mobility issues, since there are steep, ladder-like staircases with only low hand rails. There are two ways to reach this castle, one is a long, curving ramp, and the other is a short but uneven flight of stairs which was precarious on a rainy day. The views are lovely and are probably especially nice in the spring and fall. There is a park with playground equipment partway up the hill which would be a perfect place for kids to release some energy. Definitely worth the visit.

Worth visiting
Nov 2016 • Couples
After a superb lunch at Hozumitei, we took a short & comfortable 500m walk to the base of Uwajima Castle & up the hill we climbed.
It was by far the smallest of castles we have visited, but being one of the twelve original castles remaining in Japan, it added some awe. In all, including us there were about 6 person at the castle at the time we visited. So we pretty much had it to our own. Entry was at 200Yen & the entire castle can be covered within 30-45 mins. Some nice exhibits within & the view from the Tenshu was nice. It’s worth the visit especially if you happen to be nearby.
