About
Tegalalang Rice Terrace comprises a series of cascading rice fields. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the area is especially popular during sunrise and sunset. Take your time to explore the terraces, visit the nearby Bali Pulina plantation, and have a go on the mountain-edge swings. To see the fields at their greenest, visit in March, August or September. They're also green in December and February but are slippery due to the rainy season.
The rice terrace is commonly visited on a tour of Ubud which includes other places of interest like the Monkey Forest, Tegenugan Waterfall, and Tirta Empul Temple.

- Peri MolaMedan, Indonesia116 contributionsLovely Experience. Use gate with no people to get the free access. If you are into nature kind of traveller, make sure to visit this place. TOP TIPS! * if you are coming by car, you can only park at nearby parking area and if they offer you to buy tickets, opt not to but because there is big possibility you will not be asked for the tickets to get in, unless you get into the rice terrace through access from a restaurant. * Get down to the rice terrace using the stairs that has no people (not from restaurant or cafe), so it will be free access. * Inside the terrace, if there is some locals offer to quick access (through a closed fench), please be ready to pay. Overall a great experience, the pathway are random and get to the top and you can see almost all the rice terrace view. If you want extraordinary experience try their swing for only IDR 100,000 (including 5 mins swing and photos & videos on your phone). However don't rush to get one, there are plenty swings around. chose the one that has the background view you want.Visited October 2019Written 7 January 2020
- TraveltimeGenoa, Italy14 contributionsYou pay for views. Hiking is a must! This place is really nice to hike, however if you are not going to hike, and just want to watch the terraces, it is not worth it. You have to pay immediately as you park the scooter or get dropped off, the workers there rush to you to make sure you do not see anything before you have paid. Then you walk past the hundred restaurants that want you to come in to enjoy the view from their place. It is very pretty to watch it from a restaurant, however as soon as you start walking down a little bit, the view gets worse and you only have to hike up again. If you do a tour or hike for at least half an hour the scenery gets more peaceful and less touristic, so I can definitely recommend that. To just come for the views I cannot recommend because some yards away, you can enjoy the same view for nothing. Also, research a little bit if you want to take a swing, because there are many!! All with different views etc.Visited July 2022Written 21 July 2022
- Jan KWarwick, United Kingdom1,697 contributionsVery commercialThe rice terraces are beautiful. But you get pestered by all kinds of vendors to buy their wares or use the jungle swing. Our guide paid for entrance fee, still another local tried to tell us that we had to make a donation. And remember, when you go down , you also have to come back up again.Visited February 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2020

Extremely beautiful even after a light rain. Slightly muddy but still able to mitigate. It is very humid and sweaty so prepare towel & water if you intend to climb to the other side.
I took a leap of faith & tried the swing! I did not regret it at all.

Got there early in time for sunrise (ie 615am) - was beautiful light, quiet and hardly anyone around. Stayed a couple of hours - by the time we left it was getting quite busy. Enjoy the local interaction - you're standing in their fields so have a chat, pay the $1-2 for whatever photo opportunity they are offering and smile!

Brilliant experience, it’s absolutely beautiful. Make sure you get there earlier to avoid the crowds and wear trainers. There are cafes there, so bring cash to buy drinks as you go around - you’ll need them! It was a brilliant trip out, there are swings that you can pay around 100k rupees to swing on, it is worth doing for the experience. We got a taxi afterwards to the Tirta Empul Temple which was around 3 miles away from the rice terrace and it is worth visiting whilst you are nearby. This is definitely worth the trip to see the beautiful sights if you are visiting Ubud. Photos really doing do the lush landscapes any justice, you must go see it for real! A little tip to capture more of the landscapes is to use panoramic mode on your camera, both horizontally and also vertically too, the photos come out brilliantly.

It was a place with a breathtaking and magnificent view of the rice terrace. Totally different from the usual rice fields on a flatland.
You can learn how the rice grains were cultivated and then planted and then harvested.
There are a few photo op locations and the famous jungle swing.
One advice is to visit during the time where the rice plants are riping and green. September is after harvest, which meant that there are more brown then green scenery. The harvested remains are used as compost to fertilise the ground.

You get charged at every step, it’s not a lot of money but it spoils the experience. You have to pay to access it, then you have to pay to cross a bridge, then you have people trying to sell you things at every turn. You are far better off getting a coffee from one of the overlooking cafes and enjoying the view. The whole place is overflowing with instagram couples paying money to be photographed on swings

Coming from SEA, paddy fields are not too
In my list. However, the place is beautiful, nice small cafe to enjoy the view. Swings and Instagram worthy photo shoots with bird nests.

Harvesting takes place from April to May and October to November. It is during these times that you can observe some activities in the fields. If you are looking for the iconic lush emerald rice terrace, it's best to go during the wet season from October to March.

You have the entrance fee of 10,000 rupiah but make sure you have some small notes as you will be stopped a number of times at small shelters along the path asking for a "donation" if you want to continue through.

there are restaurants along the terraces. behind them (rear) there are parking where you can leave the bicycles. The exit road is hardly visible and steep. Be careful.I didn't see that you had to pay.

Hi, can we visit this place with a 5 month old whom we will be carrying in a baby carrier? Is the walk simple enough or will it be tricky with baby? Thanks a lot for your time.

I would say it would be tricky to hike down in there with a baby. Its pretty steep and not a well-maintained trail, but I think you could do it with a baby in a backpack if you’re experienced at it.

Parto il 27 per Bali con 2 bimbi piccoli. Ci sono per caso tantissime zanzare? C’è davvero l’allarme Dengue? Ho sempre girato tranquilla e spensierata dappertutto e adesso ho un po’ di paura. Grazie a chi risponderà.

My family and I are hoping to visit the rice terraces around 7:30-8:00am to have a quick look around, not our first time, and to have breakfast there before we move onto our next stop on our private tour. Any good places for breakfast with a view serving smoothie bowls etc?
GlendaCarol
Denpasar, Indonesia24 contributions
I’m not sure who serves smoothie bowls. We only visited the Dewi Cafe which is at the furthest point however if your driver stopped along the main road you could easily view the menus of a couple of places and find one that suits. Enjoy.
