President Harry S Truman took America from its traditional isolationism into the age of international involvement. Despite his power, he never forgot where he came from. We were fortunate to have a private tour of the home with a very knowledgeable NPS docent. The tour lasted about 45 minutes (although advertised as 30 minutes) because the docent took the time to answer so many of our questions. Really enjoyed this little tour. Harry and Bess appeared to have lived a very "average" life outside of the... More

The stop 1st at the info center (to buy the entrance ticket) and view its movie, set up my visit. Just delightful! And kudos to NPS staff. Well done. So close (4 minute drive/easy parking) to the library/museum, if nothing drive by to see a beautiful home.

Disappointed that we could not see more of the house. Have to stay on carpets, and there's no access to the 2nd floor.

We went to the national monument, his home's and library. All four attractions were very interesting. Seeing his home and everything just as it was when he and his wife lived there was amazing. The park Ranger did an excellent job describing the life of Bess and President Truman. The AV presentation at the monument and library are very informative.... More

This is a wonderful place to see Truman's home and the neighborhood he knew so well. Goes a long way to demonstrate how American character got forged in patriotic Midwesterners.

A very intimate look into the private life of a former President. Mr. Truman returned humbly to this quaint home after eight years in the White House. The house tour is led by a knowledgeable Park Ranger. No photography is allowed inside the house. This is a must see for those who love history, biography, and political science.

I gave this a 3 because the house was very interesting but the woman at the visitor center was not friendly and not helpful. She gave very basic information, didn't smile and offered no guidance on the highlights of Independence. We felt like we were bothering her. She was not a good representative of the national park service.

Although I never thought much of President Truman I found his home, and how he obtained it, interesting. He lived with his mother-in-law and brothers-in-law lived next door; they ate dinner together often. Our guide discussed how he would meet with past and present presidents, and other famous individuals, and after 30 minutes would get up from his chair and... More

Take time to drive by and to enjoy the beauty of the home and its grounds. It was not possible to tour the inside on a quick trip through Independence, but just seeing the home and its surrounding neighborhood gave us a sense of what it was like during President Truman's time.
