I am a writer and photographer for National Park Planner (npplan.com) and I visited Fort Washington Park in May 2016. The park is located in Fort Washington, Maryland, just south of Alexandria on the Potomac River. It preserves the site of a brick fort that was constructed between 1814 and 1824, plus a number of concrete artillery batteries built in... More

Though it never fired a shot in war, Fort Washington is a worthwhile visit for families as well as students of military history. Situated on a commanding point downriver from Washington, DC, the fort has preserved a number of its fortifications and outbuildings, which give visitors excellent views up and down the Potomac. There's ample room for children to run... More

I wanted to see this place since it's across the Potomac from Washington's house. if you are at the dock at his place you can see the fort. The grounds are lovely for the most part, there is a large expanse of grass as you approach which is kept nicely trimmed, when you go into the actual fort there are... More

Great History here. First went in 2001 it was in poor shape, lots of work to clean it up. Good Job. It spans US History from pre-1812 to the present. A must see of it the DC area.

This Fort is run by the National Park Service, It was an active military post until after WWII, It is off the beaten path, and that is part of its charm. Lots of space and few people around. The sign SAID that entrance fees would be charged starting the week after our visit, but the two rangers in the interpretive... More

This fort, like so many others in the National Park Service, is well preserved in a bare-bones style - it has the original walls and buildings but little in the way of historical restoration or dramatization. Fort Washington and its accompanying fortifications played a big part in our nation's capital from the War of 1812, through the Civil War and... More

If you like old forts, and I do, this is a fun one. Not overly preserved but with lots to clamber over. Good view of the Potomac River which it was supposed to protect. A nice smallish well done visitor center and lots of park space to hike or let the kids run around. A solid historical see.

If you are a history enthusiast you will love this well-preserved fort. A long history with various phases of development are well documented on notices around the very large site. Enthusiastic volunteer staff are keen to fill-in gaps in the notice board storyline and to put a human perspective on the story. The views from the fort are fantastic -... More

My brother in law was visiting. Both he and my husband are military history buffs so when I was looking for things for us to do, this jumped out at me. It was a great way to spend the afternoon. We wandered around several areas of the fort (old and new). In the buildings and on top of the batteries.

Ft Washington Park is a great place to spend a day. For kids there are plenty of options to keep them busy. Be it learning a piece of history, fun games in sprawling grounds, fishing, biking, stunning vistas of the river, this place has everything to spend a whole day. Entry fee of 5$ per vehicle and valid for 3... More
