The SCAD Museum of Art was founded in 2002 as part of the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. The museum's collection of more than 4,500 pieces includes works of haute couture, drawings, painting, sculpture, photography, prints and more. The SCAD Museum of Art is a teaching museum, serving Savannah College of Art and Design students and as well as members of the community and other visitors. A focal point is the Walter O. Evans Center for African American Studies, a multidisciplinary center for the study, understanding and appreciation of African American culture, art and literature. It is complemented by the André Leon Talley Gallery, named for the Vogue contributing editor and SCAD Board of Trustees member. The museum also features a 250-seat theater, a terrace and outdoor projection screen, a conservation studio, a museum café, as well as a 12-foot-long orientation touch table. An 86-foot tall steel and glass lantern welcomes visitors and elegantly redefines the Savannah city skyline.

The museum is very well curated with a great collection of exhibits in all formats. I can honestly say I was interested in almost every piece. The unfortunate side is that they don't provide any information or background on the artists and pieces of work for you to read - you have to ask one of the docents. I prefer... More

This is an excellent and well run place, full of interesting art often by less familiar names, particularly downstairs. Good on early 20th Century American paintings- a John Singer Sargeant portrait amongst his finest.

This small museum is a gem! Associated with the Savannah College of Art and Design, it doesn't seem to be a permanent collection as much as periodic exhibition of important contemporary artists. When we were there, I was most impressed with the work of Hank Willis Thomas, whose point of view was presented unambiguously and with great expertise. There are... More

We were totally aware of the contemporary/modern art focus of the SCAD Museum when we visited. We have been fortunate to see, for example, the collections at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich and the Tate Modern in London. These and other contemporary collections have left us scratching our heads and wondering how some of... More

What a terrific museum. The student docents are so well informed and truly interested in sharing the story of the exhibits we saw. The featured exhibits were fantastic. We tour many museums in many cities and this is by far one of the best we've seen. The work was so different and exciting to see. Exhibits really drew the viewer... More

The museum of the Savannah College of Art and Design is beautifully housed in a restored and extended historic building next to the visitor's center. The exhibits were well done but suffered from a lack of interpretation and while docents were on hand, they weren't very knowledgeable. Nevertheless it was busy, mostly with students; absent a specific exhibit that you... More

Unfortunately, when we went they were changing several of the exhibits. We did get a reduced ticket price because of this. The student docents were excellent. Very knowledgeable about the exhibits and the area. Very eager to chat. This made for a much more enjoyable art experience.

This is a very nice museum with interesting exhibits that periodically change. It's part of an amazing college.

Since we're not contemporary art fans, probably unfair to judge. However, the galleries are very large and light. Unusual things, at least to my eyes. I did enjoy one exhibit of fashion photos from the 70s; however, most exhibits were ery modern and way out. I know this is their forte.
