Designed by British architectural prodigy William Jay in the neoclassical Regency style, the Telfair Academy is a former mansion built in 1819 for Alexander Telfair, son of Revolutionary War patriot and Georgia governor Edward Telfair. In 1875, Alexander’s sister Mary – heir to the family fortune and last to bear the Telfair name – bequeathed the house and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum. After significant renovation by German-born architect Detlef Lienau, whose adaptations included the addition of the Sculpture Gallery and the Rotunda, the building opened to the public in 1886 as the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Great little museum with a three for one ticket. We did the history of architecture tour with a museum docent. The museum showcases some rooms of the home as well as a gallery. Worth a visit.

Beautiful former home of the Telfair family with large addition and fine paintings from the 19 th century collected by Mary Telfair and bequeathed to Savannah. Also visit the new Jepson center. It is contemporary and has the famous bird girl stature.

We visited while they had the Rodin exhibit and also the famous birdgirl sculpture. Definitely worth a visit. The entrance fee includes two other affiliated museums nearby in a nice neighborhood.

I wouldn't put this as a must see but it is interesting. The history of the house is the most interesting part to me. The art collection is varied so has something likely for most. We went because the Telfair pass included it. The Telfair...More

A very good museum with a great children's / hands-on area. Our visit was marred a bit by a private rental taking place during public hours.

When you purchase tickets ($20) you get access to all 3 Telfair Sites (Owen's-Thomas House, Academy, Jepsen Center) and you have 7 days to visit all of them. It's a great deal that can be used on a rainy Savannah day. The exhibits are wonderful...More
