- Travel3Kids95 contributionsFun TourWe had read the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil book so wanted to see this house. The tour is short (only 30 minutes) and focused mostly on the antiques and restoration of the home. The guide was happy to answer questions and it was fun to see the house and learn its history. There is a gift shop with lots of interesting items to look at as you wait for the tour to begin. We watched the movie after we toured the house and enjoyed looking for the things we saw in the movie. As noted in the other reviews, the house is still used as a residence so the tour is limited to the first floor. For the $12 fee, we thought the tour was well worth it.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 January 2023
- RF-WMiChicago, Illinois62 contributionsShort interesting tour, weird gift shopShort tour, first floor only - family still lives in house, so understandable areas would be off-limits, but disappointing. Probably more interesting if you’ve read the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Certainly worth the $12.50 admission. Gift shop is extensive, bizarre and has no relation to the mansion, its history or family. Almost exclusively a womens clothing and accessories shop, with some random knickknacks. Weird.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 22 January 2023
- eak321Orlando, Florida372 contributionsPerfect Way to Spend an HourIt's been at least 15 years since I visited the Mercer Williams House before, so we visited again. Unfortunately, you only get to visit the first floor of the beautiful house because the upstairs is still living quarters for the family when they're in town. Weird. Thankfully, the tour is very inexpensive, so what you do get to see is worth the price of admission. What made this recent tour so great was our tour guide, and I'm sorry that I forgot his name. He said he was originally from New York City, though. He was so incredibly knowledgeable and detailed with his explanation of each room in the house we visited. His delivery of the tour highlights was impeccable. I almost felt like it was his house and he was giving us a tour of his own home and the artifacts inside. We were truly impressed.Visited January 2023Written 31 January 2023
- AdamJMarciaWWest Palm Beach, Florida45 contributionsThe real life Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil! After hearing time and time again that we needed to see Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil to enjoy the city, we found it on Amazon Prime. The next day, we had to tour Jim Williiams home! It is a testament to collecting, antiques, and southern style, with a famous connection.Visited February 2023Written 8 February 2023
- Zesty321Grafton, West Virginia148 contributionsNice mansionThis was a great tour in Savannah. The home was built right after the Civil War, and has been maintained with much of its original beauty. The tour guide did not give much details about the famous movie about Mr. Williams. It was on another tour that I learned that the person killed in the house was his lover, found it weird that that fact was glossed over. Maybe it is because the same family is still involved. Clearly, I have not seen the movie, but will do so now.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 15 April 2023
- Bill RSaint Helena Island, South Carolina84 contributionsDefinitely worth 5 stars! And only costs $14.00!If you’re a fan of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, book and movie, this tour is well worth the $14 admission fee, definitely worth 5 stars. Bring my favorite movie, can’t wait to go back and watch the movie again now that I’ve been inside. Also learned on this tour that scene from Glory (Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman) was filmed here too (10 minutes into the movie). Contrary to some reviews, there is plenty of description of furniture, fixtures, renovations, etc. added by Jim Williams during the tour. 35 minutes is perfect length, an hour would be too long.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 8 May 2023
- mdyuhas00817 contributionsDanny was an excellent guideGreat tour! Very informative as to how a single man was such a important figure in keeping Savannah history alive. Our guide, Danny, was incredibly informative about the house. Later in the day we ran into him again at Forsythe park and told us some history of the parkVisited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 May 2023
- Betty R1 contributionMidnight in the Garden of Good and EvilThis is a must visit, after you read “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, or watch the movie! The tour guide was excellent and the house is filled with valuable antiques. You only get to see the gardens and the first floor because the owners occupy the bedrooms.Visited April 2023Written 21 May 2023
- Pamela FWestford, Massachusetts43 contributionsGood Tour but wished for moreIf you are a fan of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil then you know all about this house. The tour is a quick one and no picture taking is allowed. You can only visit a few rooms on the first floor. Our tour quide was informative but we would have wished to see more, especially the ballroom upstairs.Visited May 2023Written 22 May 2023
- Kirby HKansas City, Missouri91 contributionsLast on my list of homes toured in SavannahBeautiful home but could not take pictures of home or garden, tour only hit garden and main floor 4 rooms and a bathroom. Tour was short about 30 minutes. Ceiling above stairway was one of a kind. Could not go up stairway could not take a picture. If you do go I suggest you read Wikipedia before going and research history of the home. 90 percent of tour is on the last owner. History given on tour is very "selective" leaving out multiple items. It is a private residence still owned by family of owner who restored most of the house which explains omissions. Of 4 home tours done in savannah this was my least favorite for multiple reasons. If you go due to history of mr wiliams and the history of the shooting in the study along with the book based on the incident just be prepared to ask questions.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 May 2023

If you’re a fan of John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil don’t miss this opportunity to view the main level of Jim Williams’ home. The architecture and design are exquisite, as are the furnishings, art and antiques from his collection. Grady provided a fun, animated tour.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is one of my all time favorite books (even named one of my childhood cats after beautiful Lady Chablis!). Though I live only a few short hours from Savannah, I've awaited my tour through this home for many many years!
It did not disappoint. Grady knew his stuff and did an amazing job of leading this tour. It was my partners first experience with MW, it was so fun to hear this incredible history. Thank you!!

We couldn't have been happier with our tour of the Mercer Williams House. Our tour guide, Max, was incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and engaging. He provided a great mix of the 1800s and more recent history on the property and furnishings. Even though my son, who is in his mid-20s, was unfamiliar with the Midnight book, he still enjoyed the tour as much as I did. Max really clarified how the story of this house and its owner is much deeper than the notorious crime.

Read "The Garden of Good and Evil" before going on the tour. It will make more sense on the tour. Informative and interesting. Metered parking. Worth the price of admission.

Not my favorite tour, maybe it would be more interesting if you had read the book or seen the movie. Thankfully the tour was inexpensive and only 30 minutes. You only see the bottom floor consisting of 3 rooms as the upstairs is being lived in by the family.

If your a fan of the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil you’ll love the tour. You aren’t allowed to take pictures and that was a disappointment. The history of the house and old Savannah made the tour worthwhile. The architecture was and still is amazing. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars for this tour. We are traveling as a family of adults (not an option for reviews) but what a great tour. Grady was our tour guide and he was fabulous. I had taken a tour years ago and enjoyed it. I was glad to bring my daughter and mother back. The home is well preserved and lovely. The garden is gorgeous and the antiques never disappoint. Grady made this tour fun and informative.

Great history of this home at the heart of the book. A majority of the furnishing were original to the home. Excellent tour!

I was disappointed that I only got to see one floor, and a few rooms. Also, no photos. But, having Max for a tour guide made up for it. He was very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and willing to converse and answer all questions. It ended up being worth the money, just to be able to say I did.

Mercer Williams House Museum is more than just a part of a book or movie set. It is a lovely home first designed by NY architect John S. Norris for General Mercer. Construction began in 1860 but the home was sold and finished in 1868. Sadly, no one from the Mercer family ever lived there. Years later, the home was saved and restored by Jim Williams who is credited with restoring over fifty homes. The home is a masterpiece with 15-foot ceilings, a 60-foot-high entrance, and staircase with a dome and beautiful stained-glass rosette. The Williams family owns the home to this day and a niece lives upstairs, so photographs are prohibited inside the home and garden.

Is it hard to hear the tour with the docent wearing a mask? Thanks!

I went to Savannah in June. The name of the docent was Max. I seem to recall that he was not wearing a mask. I wore a mask as I am very cautious. I am sure that has changed by now due to the Delta variant and all docents are wearing masks (hopefully).

Also...I was there Thursday, June 13, 2019. An elderly gentleman, long time resident of Savannah, was the tour guide. He is fabulous! Ask him anything about Savannah history or the Mercer house history - he knows it all!

There is only a guided tour. Parking can be tight in the city, so I would recommend Uber and/or walking.

I can't remember exactly. Less than an hour! Maybe 45 minutes. Depends on how many people ask questions at the end, and if you stick around to hear the guide's answers. You only see the back garden and the 1st floor's 4 rooms. No photos allowed.

I visited the Mercer Williams House in June and was absolutely captivated. Mr Williams clearly had exquisite taste. The tour was a fantastic mix of historical detail,Architecture,Arts and Crafts and Interior decor. The guide mentioned the name of the blue colour on the study walls but I cannot remember it.I would love to use the colour in my own home which is Victorian and we have gradually restored. Can you tell me the colour and whether it might be commercially available?

The color was nice; however, he mixed ALL his colors used in all the houses he renovated. I'm afraid I can't think of a way to duplicate the color for your use since they don't allow photos & photography colors are so unreliable.
Good luck in your efforts!
