The oldest church in Pennsylvania, though designed simply, has a wealth of detail, like the ship suspended from the ceiling or the silver crown in the vestry which every woman married in this church must don.

In the hustle and bustle of contemporary commerce near the Delaware River, the small and beautiful Gloria Dei, Old Swedes, Church and its small churchyard are a pleasure to one’s senses and a reminder that commerce has taken many forms since the first Swedish Lutheran traders, adventurers, sea captains and others arrived here in 1638. Deeming the area potentially profitable,... More

We took in this church as part of a two hour walk of Penns Landing. Beautiful, serene church with an upstairs gallery. A font brought from Sweden in the 1800's. The woodwork is painted white adding to the overall beauty and simplicity of the church

Visited this church after having dinner at "For Pete's Sake" a pub up the street on Christian and Front St. It's the oldest church in Philadelphia and you can imagine back in the 1700s the river wharf area and Old Philadelphia as it grew around the church. As the second oldest church ever built on the soil of America, it surely bring a unique and valuable piece of history from some 300 years ago to us. Built just before 1700, the church is still in service today. If you can, spare an hour here, in peace and tranquility.

Old Swede's Church is unique. It was built on the site of Fort Christina when the area was New Sweden. Inside the church, suspended from the ceiling are models of the ships that transported early Swedish settlers to North America.
